I need some help. I inherited this project and I want to get the seat frames powder coated. It appears Im missing some parts and from what I can tell some previous owner used wood screws to connect the handle (see pics). Before taking these to get powder coated I want to make sure I put them together correctly, what am I missing? It seems like there should be some sort of spring action to allow the backrest to lock into place and when you pull on the release it opens up to allow the back rest to move forward.

Thank you.

Someone just bolted the adjusters on? The adjusters on both sides are supposed to be keyed to a center shaft, and would allow rotation for three different seat-back angle adjustments. They were attached to that center shaft with a pin.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

I figured I was missing some parts. Any thoughts on exactly what I need, pins, springs, rods, etc and where to get them?

That feature didn't appear until the 1966 model. All factory seats prior to that did not have locking seat backs.

For your missing parts you'll need to find used originals from the classifieds or a similar source, nobody reproduces them.

*Edit*
Looking at your seat pictures again it appears your seats may actually be from a 1966 to mid-1967 model. My last statement above still applies about nobody reproducing any of the parts you need, but now you'll need to source more if you want the complete seat back locks as well.

I thought these were original seats to the car from 1962. I may be better off buying the correct frames. What's the difference from what I have to what correct 62 seats look like? Thank you.

I'm basing my identification of your seats on the fact you have both the pivot point for the seat back release lever and the latching pin present on the leg of your seat back.

1965 and earlier:

1966 through mid-1967:

From the seat difference thread in the FAQ:

These are the 64 and earlier seat frames. Notice how the frame wraps around the top of the back.

If you look closely at these ones, you can see that the side tubes stop just near the top and the levers down by the sides. This shows that these are 66, or 67 seat backs.

In this link, you can clearly tell that it is a 65 seat frame.

While seats may fit the tracks across the years, proper seats are specific to certain years.

Squared seat backs ended in 1964. (this is from '63, but same style for '64 and earlier)

1965 is the first year with rounded tops on the seat backs. They are one year only, since there is no seat back release. You simply push the seat back forward for access to the rear seat.

This is 1966 only. It has a seat back release arm with white knob - only for 1966.

1967 had two styles: early 1967 seat back release is same as '66, but the knobs are black. Seat fore/aft adjustment knob is black. Shifter knob is black.

Later (mid) 1967, the seat back relase was relocated up on the side of the seat back. Everythings else about this pic is wrong for '67, except steering wheel and horn bar. (This is not a '67, but the photo depicts the proper seat back realease for mid and late '67 bugs)

Thank you. Since no one reproduces the parts I need I guess my only option is to find another set.
