Just picked up a sandrail and trying to identify the motor to get some parts.specificly an ignition coil, previous owner said it's a 1600cc but does it matter what ignition coil?, But any other help will be greatly appreciated, possibly date of manufacture or what it came out of?
Code on engine HS626855. I've tried to look it up but nothing has came back. Thanks.

Are you sure the engine number starts with HS and not H5? H5 case would be from a 1968-69 beetle.

I couldn't find it in the tech articles here:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/engine_letters.php

But did find this thread about an engine with a similar code:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=352002

and here is another thread that suggests the "S" may mean a VW remanufactured engine

Canadian HS rebuilt case? Learn something new every day. I wonder what that was code for? It almost looks like that first letter used to be a B.
