Since I got my 1984 vanagon/camper 1.9 engine. I always noticed it runs very rich. I first changed the sensor, then the pressure regulator. Timed it (with forum help). Is there any way to adjust it?

When does it run rich?

Just at idle?
Or thru the whole rpm range?

If idle only, there is a mixture adjustment on the AFM that tunes idle mixture.

If it runs rich the whole time, it commonly is the engine temp sensor. When they fail, the ECU thinks that motor is super cold and sends way too much fuel over the whole curve.

Sensors are cheap and easy to replace.

I did replace the sensor but I will try it again. Someone once mentioned to clean it with carb cleaner or electronic parts cleaner and others have said not to. Will order one and still try cleaning it and see.

How do you know it runs rich?

Have you put a wideband O2 sensor on and run it down the highway?

You can smell it.The spar plugs are black. You can see the black on tail pipe. The o2 sensor was nasty black.

Engine temp sensor should not need cleaned, It's just a temp sensor screwed into the case.

Check the electrical connections to the temp sensor as well. Anything green looking is bad and will throw the calibration off.

The other possibility is that the AFM is going bad and needs some love.
However, I'm not convinced of that yet....
Get thru the temp sensor troubleshooting first.

There is an Ohm reading the temp sensor should read. Check that out...

Is the VW ignition coil on the 1.9 the same as the 1600 engines?

Did you change the O2 Sensor? If its covered in soot its contaminated.
