How to identify a Wild Westerner if it has been repainted different colors. Go to the m code plate the identifying numbers are 736. The m code plate is located inside the bus behind the driver’s seat on the short metal wall. It is about the size of a credit card. Note: the tag in the door jam is not the m code plate.

This was posted in this thread on 23rd of september. I located the origin of the pic. I was thinking about the photo in the quote above. It shows three Wild Westerners moving on down the production line, in what must have been April or May 1973. I was thinking that the photographer who took that must have taken a bunch of photos all around the Hanover factory, maybe some of those other photos show more Wild Westerners getting built. It would be nice to see some right at the end to see if they had the blue stripes fitted or not (it seems odd to me that we have found both a factory part number for the stripes and a VWoA part number).
I recalled that Das Bundesarchiv has a load of photos online that were taken in various VW factories around 1973.
They were all taken in 1973 by Lothar Schaack, unfortunately he only got to Hanover in August 1973, long after all the Wild Westerners had been built. The above photo made me check the book molenari wrote with Alexander Prinz, ‘VW Transporter and Microbus - Specification Guide 1967 - 1979” as I wanted to double check when the sliding door pressing changed, just incase the photo above had been incorrectly dated. Sure enough the date on the photo appears to be correct as the pressing changed at the start of the 1974 model year (August 1973). It was while I was looking through molenari’s book that I looked a little more carefully at the production line photos that are scattered throughout the book.
The coloured production line ones all appear to have been taken during the 1973 model year, I wonder if they were taken at the same time as the Wild Westerners above were being put together? Unfortunately some of the photos are too small to be able to tell if any WWs are present.
The coloured photos appear to belong to VW, maybe it would be worth contacting them to see if they have anymore Hanover production line photos from April/May 1973? |
I found a group of press photos dated from this day. Some back fill ifo on the WW assembly.

Hello,
I am currently dealing with engine adjustment, valve adjustment and finding false air spots. Unfortunately,
I do not have exact setting values for a 1.7 liter with engine code CE. The German version is a bit different - I don't know what exactly is different yet.
My question: are there the exact setting values for the CE with automatic transmission somewhere?

It sure is quiet in Wild Westerner Land.
I would like to share a tip for all of you non-mechanic parts replacers like myself. When replacing an old distributor with a new one check the two prong gear at the bottom of the new distributor to make sure it aligns with the old one.
If you look closely you will see the two prongs are offset and not directly across from each other. After several hours of fighting to get the new distributor
installed I realized the gear was 180 degrees out on the new distributor.
The West Coast is burning up and the East Coast is flooding absolutely crazy.
What is next ?

Over a decade ago I saw a picture of a Wild Westerner painted flat black in the Northwest possibly the same one. Please give us a picture of the m code plate located behind the drivers seat so we can add it to the survivors list.

Being that it was registered 48 years it would be in an archive of the California DMV Assuming that the vehicle was originally registered in California.

Do we have anyone that knows someone with the California DMV that can help [ our Wild Westerner Club Member in Germany to get the information he needs. |

Hey the Spokane-area WW that was reportedly painted flat black was lowered and had a early bay bumper:
So this flat black just acquired by S1973westerner is probably a different one.

I am glad you mentioned this, not an hour ago I removed the Spokane Flat black WW from the reported sighting section thinking this was one and the same.
