Got the passenger side door card on. Seems a little wrinkly but hopefully will settle down with time.
Also placed in under layment and mats. Not sure about all the layers for the tunnel. There’s a thin abrasive layer, a thicker softer layer, and the mat itself. We dry fitted one possible order and its seems that it will have to be adhered to the the tunnel to get it to lie down. We just put the finished mat on for now.
We also know we need to pull the back mat under layment under further.
We almost put the seats in and went for a ride but I have had trouble with seats before and want to put these in once and for all. So we will wait for Luis to send back to wall mat.
Gotta tell you, it is starting to feel like a real car! |

Woke up this morning and had a terrible thought.
Perhaps what was grounding was the wire from the VR to the dash light.
And, if it was, it was not going to be easily fixed, being in the tube through the car.
Went out and tested it… not grounded. Whew. But what the heck burned that wire the second time?
Hmmm…
Well, we have gotten a new speedo. This one is 12/58, the same year our car was made, and it looks different from the one we have on there now— it is like the manual.
I did some testing on it and it conforms to the wiring diagram as you would expect.
So we tested the old one (still in our car) and quickly realized there was an important difference— even though the old one is only one year later.
See if you can spot it:
The middle bulb is powered from the ignition switch in the old one and is not in the new one! I was basing the wiring on this diagram:
The dot on the back of the speedo is the terminal with power from the ignition switch. And you can clearly see the middle bulb is not attached to it (just as in our new speedo). It gets its power (in a circuitous manner mind you) from the headlight switch.
So, if you hook up the ignition switch as shown in the diagram, and turn the key to the on position, you are sending unfused battery power to the terminal on the speedo, through the middle light bulb holder, and directly to ground.
Here’s the middle holder that shows what happens when you do:
Yep, you get a nice little burn mark on it. Not to mention a fried wire.
So, I have no idea how the old speedo is supposed to be wired (though I have heard vague tales of different grounding on different models). That said, we seem to have finally found what the problem was and, happily, have a new speedo that conforms to the diagram. Will see if we install it before the show but I for one am feeling better about the wiring than I have since the problem.
We also fixed a bit of steering slip (yep, again). Alex managed to muscle another 1/4 turn out of the bolt and steering seems tight again.
Noticed that a front parking light went on when we stepped on the brakes (jeez, hadn’t thought to look) and realized that power is somehow backing up through the signal lever housing. Looks like two more diodes are in our future. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Yep.
Here’s the speedo wiring (1961-65) for the one the PO put on our car.
And the power for the middle bulb comes from the ignition switch. (It’s connected to that little dot with the other two bulbs.)
Mystery solved — PO’d again. _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Our car at Kelley Park, San Jose, CA April 17th, 2016
The engine that I think was responsible for the award (and that we did not buy):
Looks like we did get some of the parts though- generator, VR?, battery, fuel pump, distributor… in fact, now that I look at it (and am more familiar with it), it seems that we got that engine with the good stuff removed.

Our new 12/58 speedometer, installed:
Made a mess with some adhesive trying to stick the bezel in.
We have yet to test the warning light wires we attached (ran out of time) but we did test the dash lights. As there is no wiring attached to the directional signal light, the dash lights below are shining through the gel. Paid top dollar for a nice restoration too. Some interior baffling missing?
Yep, zero miles. Our car is brand new! _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0
