36hp judsons used the double belt pulleys .40hp used a singe belt pulley ... so most likely its a 36hp ..if the judson has cracks in the inside where the rotors and the Manifold intake port is at its junk and just a show piece...I bought one a long time ago when I didnt know much mine was junk and i lost lots of $$ to find out it was cracked in the inside and couldn't be welded ...a guy was selling one on Craigslist I told him if he could take it apart and send me pictures to see if it was cracked he was stubborn that it wasn't and was on a running engine 6years ago lol and had been sitting so eventually he opened it up and ding ding ding was crack i told him it wasn't fixable since I was like him stubborn when I had mine and was in denial that it could be fixed but all the judson specialist I REMEMBER that guy from Argentina who builds parts for the judsons he told me no cant be fixed look for another one...so I told that guy on Craigslist the samething and showed him my old emails conversation with the specialists and he told me you just scamming me and want it for free I deal with guys like you all the time on Craigslist..and I told him don't sell me it lol a few years past it was still on Craigslist and after looking at his add no lie it was weird he emailed me and wanted to see if i wanted to buy it since he talked to a few guys and they gave him the same story and that he was sorry for being rude to me when I was just giving him advise ..and to give him 100 for it i passed on it he had it posted for $50 and I guess it sold never seen his add again unless he gave up ....my rule on those jusdons is to open it up and see if it has the common cracks there's no need to spend money on junk if its junk ....I still think I have my 40hp single judson pulley that goes on the compresser not the lower on that goes on the crank pulley that was the only thing good I kept from that junk judson ...

Is it hard or complicated to open a Judson supercharger up to inspect for cracks/damage in the case. How about how to inspect the roto/vanes? I doubt I would even attempt it without advice and perhaps a "how-to" write-up here in theSamba.com Is there a good write-up somewhere on how to do this. I imagine that new gaskets? and torque specs would be needed?

I have a great looking condition and complete 36hp Judson set put away for the past 30 years that would be fun to re-activate on one of my engines if I could fairly easily open to inspect for its condition.

Thanks for any advice and tips on where to look...

Bill

They are easy to take apart.
I’m curious as to why the cracks can’t be welded are they made of pot metal or something?

That's what I said why can't it just be welded but at the time I emailed many with no you cant was never given an answer to why not ... pot metal can be brazed now days with muggy weld 1....but the judson is cast iron I belive ....

They can be resleeved, I have pictures somewhere of a couple of Judsons that have had the chambers repaired. If you were paying for someone to do it for you it wasn't worth the expense because at that time it was cheaper to buy another body. Alejandro Martin always says if he buys five bodies, three might be OK.

To check the chamber, rotor and vanes is very simple, you remove the six bolts on the rear plate, the other two holes are for jacking bolts so screw in two 5/16 bolts to prise off the back plate.

Dave Cormack wrote an article on a rebuild for Hot VWs: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/judson/te...ormack.pdf

You'll find most of the articles from the old "Judson Register" website in the Samba Archives under the "Literature" tab: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/

They always looked like it would be pretty easy to build you own out of a piece of thick walled aluminum tubing. Do the vanes just float in the slots? If you had it hard anodized it would have a lining about as hard as diamonds and if you were to make Teflon tipped vanes it should have a pretty long life like the B&M mini blowers.
How much boost does one make?
