Pedal Assembly Color - Painted Or Not?

Would the pedal assembly bracket on ‘73 Thing be painted black to match the pedals, or is it bare like the one pictured? Mine is kind of bare, but looks like it may have been painted at some point. Just trying to figure out how to make mine ‘as new.’ This is a picture I grabbed from an ad for a Beetle pedal assembly, but it appears to be the same. Thanks.
