Specifically about the seating of the BOWS.

Here is a cross-section of how the inner tray feels where the bows fit. I suppose I am inserting correctly in the upper trough. When they seat deeper, they tend to sag.

Does anyone remember if they specifically seated the bow tip into the upper trough?

I am kinda afraid that they don't seat as well and could possibly jumpout and end up in the lower trough. If that happens after I am done it will be a disaster.

They go in the inner groove, just like where your picture shows them. The outer one closer to the drip rail makes for a saggy headliner.

steve~

that thread is the biggest piece of trash on the samba when it comes to headliner installation. I would LOVE to see how any of their headliners turned out.

start:
B,C,D posts (vertical)

then your window sills (horizontal)

insert bows in proper order

hook it in the REAR. at the ANCHOR BOW. the one with the foolish sharp spotwelded triangles.

with your headliner rolled up, hook the rear to the abovementioned location. while you have the rolled headliner in your hand, reaching through the windows that aren't there, have your buddy hook the bows in position.

when you hit the windshield, clip to frame. now admire your saggy ass diaper.

pull like your life depends on it till you get to the windshield, adjusting bows as needed.

get to the very front bow and say fuck. the headliner is made 3" off. remove front bow, cut about 1/8" off of it and keep trimming till it's happy.

PULL. clip. look.

trim bow pockets till the desired "hang" is there. PULL and clip to the upper window frame, again, start in the rear, and work forward.

that is the jist of it. there is a ton more, but that will get most started.

steve, not flaming you at all and you know that.

you MUST START IN THE REAR starting at the front will not give you any chance to take up the slack in the headliner.

vwpieces said it best...they're made fast, not correct.

but, they can be made to work. I am happy (elated) with mine, but it took a lot of effort to get it there...

this is why I say that some "uniform wrinkles" or lines are acceptable back by the hinge area.

yea, start at the back.

it's the only way to anchor the headliner and be able to pull. there is a metal rod in the second to last panel seam (or first seam) looking forward. the very tail gets pinched by a channel by the rear hatch.

BD is right on the bow location

doing the side panels around the windows isn't *too* bad but for sure the main headliner is a 2 person job.

i've begged with TMI to send these rolled up in a tube like VW did. they will send your headliner folded up like fucking origami and shove it into a cigarette box. i let my headliner relax for about 6 months stretched out in our bonus room. i'd strongly advise getting every wrinkle out before you attempt the install. the way they shove it in a box pretty much seals the deal and you will have fold lines because of this

AND MAKE SURE ALL OF YOUR BOW POCKETS ARE IN THE CORRECT LOCATION

A note i will add about the BOW SEATING. Pay very close attention. There are wires in the trough the bow goes in. Get them up and above the bow trough, insert the bow and then let the wire go were it wants to.

Also something I never saw mentioned on any headliner thread.

and technically the bow ends had little rubber booties on them. i didn't put any on because the bows punched thru the boots on the original installation. no vibrations/noises

i did use a jute pad on the roof however

I went back and forth whether to use the end caps. Found some today. Added them to and order of other stuff. I figured the bows would eat thru them in another 50 years, like these did.

a head liner is a PITA. You need heat or steam. Lay it out in the sun to warm it, and if you use heat be very careful. That is why shops use steam. I paid to have mine done. Sometimes the kit ones need alterations to fit right. Also the style headliner changes with year. Some have more bows and some have less. Same for ones with sunroofs.
