Congrats to the owner, and it's an immaculate Super, but the price is *insane.*
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-volkswagen-beetle-13/
BaT really drives prices out of the range of a fun hobby for the budget minded like me who used to be able to find a sub-3k car to fix up. At least I may get my investment back if I hold onto my two Supers rather than flipping them after 5-6 years of driving them. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

It is. And it's ridiculous how the AD praise that car...
May be nitpicking but although it's a nice Bug here are just two findings at first glance...

I sometimes peruse this local used car dealer's site since they sell lots of Subarus. Came across this today-- Nice but... $11k?

Crack me up - "Last year of the flat window." As for the price, they're going up as if we were in Argentina dealing with hyper-inflation. I've had to raise the agreed to value on my '73 the last 2 years in a row. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

It could be. The seller joined Jan 10 2022.

I thought it had been lifted from the Super that sold on BAT a few days ago, but that one was a '74 and this is a '73. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Does *anyone* sell good rubber seals? These are 2 years old from either Wolfsburg West or West coast metric. After 1k road trip they leave black streaks on the fender, and if I happen to swipe them when drying the car they also streak. Pure crap.

Have you tried Armor All, or waxing them?
I've made my own rubber seals out of innertube rubber pick'd up along freeway shoulders. They've work'd out well, no mess, lasted years, even decades. But I soak them in the best Armor All ("Ultimate Clean" version) before 1st installation, let them dry out; and then after installing, occasionally do a touch up when ever it's possible to do without getting Armor All on other parts. |

I don't know. For a '73 that needs a serious tune-up (who knows what that actually means?), floor pan replacement, and a transmission, for $7500, I don't think I'd personally put it in a 'scam' category. Seems like if you could do the work yourself, you might have a fair car at a fair price? If you pay someone to bring it up to snuff, you'll be upside down financially.
My only whine about the ad is this:
"...when fully-improved, these Beetles are going for $20,000 to $45,000+ on classic car websites!"
I hate claims like that. If it were true, the seller would put a few grand into it, and make 5x their money. You can't say "these Beetles" as if this one lumps into the same category as a Split value-wise.
It's no different than guys who have a rotten-up-to-the-door-handles Bay sitting in the back 40 who think it should be worth at least $50k as is, because a Bus just sold on Barrett-Jackson for $300,000. They are not the same thing, so you can't compare them that way. |

I didn't want to wait for an order to Belmetric so I went to Home Depot for hardware. I am complaining about the cost. 4 M6x14mm & 4 M6x18mm Machine screws, 8 nuts and 8 washers - all stainless steel, $17! Holy crap, that's a lot of money for not much hardware. Not sure Belmetric would be any cheaper, but man! _________________ Repeat after me "I am smarter than metal!" |
