Sorry for the confusion I meant beige grey, its definitely not sand green, as you said its a piece that has never really seen the sun, its cut from a subhatch hole at the westfalia factory. Although sand green fades over time in the sun to look more beige, thats a fresh piece so no way thats L311 sand green.
It could only be L472 Beige grey from a swr/bg or L345 light grey in 1959 and it looks more like L472.
I get that you want to get it correct before painting, you've put a lot of effort into your so23 and it looks great. But, you have a very reliable source that's obsessed with original paint, telling you your bus would have a L311 roof, based of a comparison with an original VW paint chip. That would seal the deal for me. |

Normally I would agree but....every single sk692a bus in this thread does not look like sand green on top to me.The Palm green bottom, yes, the sand green no. I have owned several og paint pgsg buses and have one now and the light colour just doesn't look like sand green to my eyes, on computer etc etc. Maybe Lind could park his og paint 58 westy next to the sk692a and take some comparison photos for us. Thay would be cool to see, especially those two buses ; ) |

Lind was the one I mentioned who compared his L311 og VW paint chip with an og sk692a bus. Said it was the same, see the bottom of the previous page. |

Lind no longer owns "Jakes old westy" but fortunately it is still here in the Pacific Northwest!!
it is definitely sand green....no if's, and's, or but's about it. My old bus and one other bus on the east coast are the only original paint SK692A buses that exist, so looking at any of the others is pointless.
Jerome, I am still happy to get you in touch with the current owner (he may chime in here) but that sand green sample looks awfully close to me. Its going to be nearly impossible to get a PERFECT match being on opposite sides of North America, so you may have to just go with the palm green and sand green codes. _________________ drive your split. |

The sand green fades a bit different on different buses. Nowhere near as bad as sealingwax red though. Anyway, I compared my paint chip to an area in the door jamb that has less faded paint. I have owned a lot of PG/SG buses over the years, and I am very familiar with it.
clockwise from left: Drew's '58 walkthrough, the repainted Goodrich '58 westy, some SO42, my '58 westy, Jake's old westy, some porsche.

If you are referring to the original paint one on the east coast, I think you know the answer to that question. We are still waiting for the owner to gain an appreciation for original paint. _________________ .
