|

GoWesty has a modified Oil Pressure Relief plug, which they advertise as being able to accommodate a 1/8" oil temperature sender. (https://www.gowesty.com/product/mechanical/24654/oil-pressure-relief-plug-with-external-hex-threaded-port-) Could this port be used to connect an oil PRESSURE sensor? There is a sensor available that will fit the threads, but I do not know if the oil pressure reading at this spot is reflective of the oil pressure sensed at the normal oil pressure port. I am hoping to install this on a 1983 air-cooled CV engine. This solution seems much easier, and cleaner, than installing a hose extension with the pressure sensor remotely mounted. On the air-cooled CV engines, this relief plug mounts higher on the engine by the oil filter, so the sensor will not be hanging down in harms way. I would also think that the higher position would not make it the ideal place for a temperature sensor. I did contact GoWesty with this question a couple days ago, but have not heard back.
My question is: will an oil pressure sensor installed on this plug give the same readings that an oil pressure sensor installed at the normal position (next to the distributor) on a 2.0l CV engine?
In the picture below, of a Bay engine, the large slotted plug can be seen just next to the oil filter.

i don't know squat about CV engines but the oil pressure relief system has all the pressure regulation FORWARD of the piston. any pressure behind the piston is leakage and not indicative of engine conditions.
i have the GW relief plug with an oil temp sender.... great location for that. not for oil pressure. _________________ -dan

I doubt it, that side of the relief piston doesn't have pressure. |
That is what I suspected. Too bad, it seemed like such an easy solution.
Thank you both for your replies. |

analog OP senders usually have big knob cases for the diaphragm movement... you really don't want that hanging down as the lowest part of yer engine. _________________ -dan

It is actually a well protected spot on the CV engines, but that doesn't help without any oil pressure. |
