Hi Guys. A late reponse but thanks to everyone who helped out with their recommendations.

The problem was solved in the end by packing out the drive with 10 shims instead of the normal 2 to bring it up to the correct height. When the drive was removed it only had one shim on it and that was split. Obviously there has been some wear on the case but all working good now.

All the best

Russ

Shimming it with 10 will alter the lash with the brass gear on the crank. This could case the brass gear to wear so check the oil for gold particles.

If I'm not mistaken some cases have had the bottom shim replaced with a thicker shim, after the seat of the drive gear is machined out deeper. Perhaps this happened to yours, and the thicker spacer had not been reinstalled?

Then the gear engagement would be tighter and they would grind leaving brass shavings in the oil.

Whoever built the engine didn't check it. I would suspect they cut corners in other places.
