I have pulled the old headliner out of my 64 13 window and noticed that there is a wooden strip all around the top edge.
I havent seen inside a deluxe before and was wondering if this is original or in other words if it was done to deluxes made in other countries .
It is a one owner van and had never been touched.

I have never seen that on a USA spec bus. does the bus have the claws to hold the headliner on the side of the air vent?

Was this an Australian produced knockdown kit bus?
Perhaps they refitted a generic Kombi style body at the time of assembly, and didn't have the headliner teeth in there, so they just modified in the shop, to fill the order.

It is an Aussie ckd built van, There are no claws that I can see.
It just has the wooden strip screwed to the edges and then the headliner is stapled to it.
Then there is a finishing strip that covers the staples, this is just stapled in the middle so you cant see any staples.
I was wondering if this is how the Aussies did their headliners.
I have seen other vans, like micros that have had the headliners taken out and you can see the screw holes in the sides??
As I said this is a one owner van so it was done at the factory.
We do have some funny disrepencies as mine is a June 64 built van with ice pick door handles and outward facing vents.

My 1965 Australian Kombi (model 234) is getting toward the end of it's metal work, and has me thinking about interior. There are remnants of the "claws" up front that look to have been ground off, indicating a possible fabric headliner (?) I've only seen grey pressboard overhead panels in split-windshield Kombis in the US. Does anyone have any information, or ideally pictures of an original 1965 Australian Kombi. This bus was originally presumed to be Turkis (incorrect for a '65 in US), but appears to have been Birch Green. Can anyone confirm that Birch Green was an original Kombi color for 1965 in Australia. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
