I'm definitely interested in ANY roof rack so please update if you are still pursuing this. |

Any thought to making the laterals flat, rather than following the roof curve? That may allow for better stacking, especially for building materials. |

No, they have to curve similar to the roof or they will be utilitarian/homely.
They should be closer to the roof curve about 2" above the roof.
It will be a custom bend with a lateral jig! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

I know the curved ones look better. My Pedro Fasty rack is curved, and for low boxes/stuff it is perfect!
But for a Square, maybe utilitarian is a good thing! Lumber, plywood sheets, stuff like that fits better with flat crosspieces.
Maybe you could make clamp-on straight crossbars that clip to the side rails when you need a flat surface? The best of both. Front and rear crosspieces might interfere, though. Something to consider. |

The only thing with a lower roof rack is that it's a bit difficult to get a sponge/wash mitt under there when washing the car. This is assuming having wood slats. Probably not a concern but wanted to point that out. |

I haul stuff on mine, so I build 'em flat
still have to do some slats for the black one but lumber pricing is retarded lately
