Why are you using the hanger? |

that doesn't look like they give much room for the rubber sleeve.
Nice looking set-up though, the muffler looks smaller diameter than the VS, I'm guessing it's going to have a growl when you get on the gas _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

It's a standard oval-shaped muffler, on end, to fit in the space. Having had both exhausts, the Python sounds much better!
I was able to get my finger between the pulley shroud and the heat shield but that's about it. It's very tight. I wound up having to trim the heat shield because it was rubbing on the body. I adjusted the shield as far in the opposite direction as it could go.

The engine is in the car and the silencer is on.
It looks a little uneven ... like the right side is a little lower.
I actually have contact on the right side between the muffler and the apron. The left side is fine. Have to figure that out.
The apron had to be reconstructed so it's possible that is playing into this.
You weren't kidding about it being tight in there where the heat shield needs to go.

I was able to get some clearance with the right-side apron by tuning the collector location.
Now for the heat shield.
The instructions call for installing the muffler first, then the heat-shield. I wasn't able to get a good angle doing it that way. It's just really tight in there, working from above.
So I dropped the muffler and put the heat shield in place from underneath and then brought the muffler up under the heat shield. Done.
The rubber boot is just going to be a challenge. I wonder if that can be installed before the heat shield working from below? Hmmm.
Anyways, time to mark the location of the 02 bung before dropping it all for the last time.

I'll be interested in whether you're able to get the heat shield mounted with the bellows boot installed - I tried it a couple of different ways and couldn't make it happen.
I've been mulling over the location of the bung on the elbow - the location recommended by CSP would have the sensor wire sticking out the side. I'm curious about where you wind up placing it. |

Nearly identical to where I'm going to put mine. This spot allows the wire to run up between the two pipes and into the engine bay. Waiting on the welder to have some time to do mine. I'm going to have him weld the collector connections all the way around the pipes as well. |

Did you get your exhaust bung installed?
Dropping my muffler and collector off at the welder's house in the morning - he's installing the bung and welding the collector for the two pipes tack welded on as is - once I'm a little further along (and he's less busy), I'll have him put flanges in and then weld the other two pipes to the collector. I have exhaust leaks at the collector on the two pipes that are slip fit and there's no way to get a clamp around them. |

Mine leaked also.

on the slip joints on my A1 sidewinder, I used a skim of high heat silicone before slipping together, they never leak. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

I used some of that Ultra Copper Exhaust Gasket Maker from Permatex on the 3 and 4 slip joints. Worked great. Wish CSP had done that with the 1 and 2 joints before they tacked them in.
I suspect the leak was throwing off my O2 readings. The sensor is just downstream from the collector.
Otherwise this is a really nice exhaust.
