I found this ebay shop here in the UK that supplies 7mm 'cap' rivets with the tool. They are 9mm long, i was thinking they maybe too long but i'm going to give them a try on my BD pockets.
I took one of my original pocket rivets out and these look to be the same type. _________________ 64 356 C Coupe |

Try a search for "press rivets" on eb@y, or if not there, google them. |

if its any help, i just used these for making the interior for a bus .
it was my opinion that they were nickle plated originally and 7mm.
i bought a few different sizes and finishes for sampling. i used 9mm studs with the 7mm caps. they work just fine for the thickness of the panel and pocket together

I just wanted to bump this topic and add a twist. I used some OG pockets on some panels I made for my DC.-
One of them had all 8 OG rivets still attached. I'm not sure of the correct terminology, but they were clearly the two-piece "post and cap" style as shown here (sorry for the pic-my kids broke the menu button on my camera and it won't focus closer than about 2 feet)-
I tried to reuse them by pulling them apart but they are smashed together really well. I remember seeing this style at our local ACE hardware store, and sure enough they still had them. Enough to do two pockets is $2.99 And I measured the OG rivet head which was 6mm. The new one measured 6.4mm but I think you have to agree they look pretty close to OG. The head is slightly domed, they are SUPER easy to install and hold incredibly tight. One or two blows with a hammer and a drift was all it took.
I guess the only downside is they aren't copper/brass colored. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

those pockets look pretty nice.
has the issue regarding wether the rivits were copper or nickel plated been resolved yet; or is this still on-going? _________________ WANTED:

going by my personal findings i still stand by that they were originally nickel, likely copper underneath for plating process. of the rivets i have come across, the backsides still have evidence of nickel/chrome . i would definately love to see a NOS door panel or at least a very low milleage, well kept bus still having originals to see the facts. _________________ www.thebustransfer.com

Zombie thread back from the dead.
Has anyone found a good source for the pocket rivets?
The typical rivets that come with the cheapo rivet guns would probably look pretty ghetto on my nice Baltic Birch door panels. _________________ "Saying what we think gives us a wider conversational range than saying what we know."

Here is the original door panel in an April 1961 bus with original rivets in nice shape. This looks like light corrosion of cad plating.
This was repainted grey over the panel and rivets, but I do see some coppery round the edges.
The originals rust with time.
I do have rivets close to original, which I use on the pockets I make and attach to door panels. I had them cad plated. They start out shiny, but dull with time.

Clara, do you sell those rivets loose?

Yes I do. Send me an email through one of my ads. I am not checking the forums as much these days. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

i haven’t cut the holes yet…….still thinking about how to do that cleanly, but i stumbled across the rivets on McMaster Carr and you can see that they are an exact match. Nickel plated brass. They seem a little taller, but the spec says they cover very thin material so I’m expecting them to crush a little.
Check it out:
Sorry for the sideways pic. Other pictures are compared to one i removed from my original deteriorated door panels.
For the map pockets, i think i will wet them down, warm them up with a heat gun then clamp them down to a board to dry. A little warped around the edges, but if i clamp or screw a board down on the edge I’m hoping it will lay flat when they dry out. We will see.
Thinking about a large hole punch for the rounded corners of the hole in the door panel, then beat a heavy duty Hyde Knife from corner to corner to get a straight edge.
Maybe i will create another thread with those pics |
