Which bell housing will work for a start-up stand?
'74 type 4.

it and the starter need to fit the flywheel size. You'll have to measure it. You could have a 1978 engine with a 1978 flywheel and bellhousing on your bus now, or a 1972 flywheel and bell housing. These cars have had too many owners.

This bus is unmolested. I need to know if a 72-3-4-5 etc comes up I can use it.

If you are sure it's stock 68-75 bus, or any 12 volt beetle or type 3 will fit for your purposes.

You can use any bus or Vanagon bellhousing if you have the 210 or 215mm clutch. You need the starter that matches the bellhousing you are using though.

The problem comes in when you have the '76 and later 228mm clutch and try to mate it with the earlier bellhousing. It can be done but takes some clearancing of the bellhousing to get the piece to play with each other. If you are building a stand tough, I would suggest that one way or another you plan to make it work with the 228 clutch as that way it would be universal to most VW aircooled engines plus the Vanagon WBXer engines.
