The crank pulley I have appears stock however there aren't any grooves/ridges it's smooth. We thought to replace the seal sand seal we're guessing but can't find them seperately. Have to buy a new pulley and bolt on seal together? |

Post a pic of your pulley.
It helps to know where you should be looking. Remove the large bolt holding the pulley to the crank shaft. Note where the woodruff key way is on the ID of the pulley where it mounts to the crank. When the woodruff key slot is at 9-o'clock (as seen from the rear of the car) the TDC mark should line up with the case split.
I wonder if you have an old degree pulley? These were aluminum with "stick on" degree marking ring. Over the years the sticker wears off and you are left with a pulley with no markings. _________________ AshMan40

Yes you have a stock pulley that’s been turned down for sand seal. If it is leaking I’d install a new seal and a different pulley because that pulley looks rusted where the belt rides, maybe just lighting or camera angle.yes you can buy pulley and seal by themselves or together. The cheap way out if you have access to a bead blast machine would be clean that old pulley and be sure to tape off that area where the seal contacts the pulley. Do pay attention to where belt rides on pulley or you’ll be eating up belts.
Here’s the old Santana pulley from the 70s notice it has the stock type grooves that screw the oil back into the engine. The downfall here is whatever sand or shit blowing around also gets screwed into the engine, not really a problem if you drive on the street.
Front view of Santana pulley notice key way at 9 o’clock
Here’s what groove should look like smooth and clean for max belt life
Front view a pulley like yours but I’m running the 36hp pulley bolt for no other reason than I like the way it looks with a dimple. |
