Was there a supplemental driving light switch or was it wired direct to the head light switch

usually a relay with a separate power lead. The relay trigger on off is tied to low beams and a switch so the aux lights only come on with low beams. An off road set up would be totally separate but most states the aux off road lights would have to be covered when driving other than off road.

Yes when I had done this years ago I ran the driving light power via a relay and the trigger wire for the relay was tapped into the the white high-beam wire (either one) at the fuse box (you can use a piggyback-type spade terminal for that). That way when the high beams were turned on, the relay closed and fed power to the driving lights.

Tap in on the OUTPUT side of the fuse so that if your relay shorts out it blows the fuse rather than melts a lot of wiring under the dash.

I was hoping that there was an OEM dedicated switch that disconnected them from the high beam switch. In Aus this is what we need to have for registration. Perhaps the Westfalia's had them ? or I believe there was a foul weather package did they have a switch ?

No extra switch - also not included at Westfalia or bad weather package Z01.
Extra light switch only for fog lights (rear/front) in Z01.
And st some extra switch for interior light.

See VW wiring plans
