Not an engine guy so sorry if this is a newb question. I've got a 1970 KG that I just purchased and also had a 1970 KG back in 1986 that does this same thing....when I turn the engine off, it doesn't just "turn off". There's an extra "putter, shimmy and shake" or two as the engine gives a final second or so before turning off. Anything to be done about that?

Perhaps a dirty idle cut-off jet if your engine has one.
Excess carbon deposits. Try adding Seafoam for each fill up.
I also run 93 octane in both my Ghia's.

Idle speed could be too high
Timing too advanced

You don't mention if any work has been done that you know of such a basic tune up. I would start with a full tune up including adjusting the valves. These engines are quite basic and not to complicated to work on. If you haven't already, get the Bentley Service Manual for Beetle and Karmann Ghia 1970 to 1979 with the orange cover. It is money well spent.

I have the same problem, but only after I've been on a longer drive (15 to 20 miles or more) I have a 1641 engine.

Second point: I had a standard carb on the engine and the engine cut off cleanly then, but since I've had twin carbs (small Webers) I've had that spluttering and shaking 2 second problem after cutting the ignition.

You’re probably running too rich and the carbon build up is on fire causing what was called dieseling. Either fix that or turn it off in gear.
I run a 2276 with dual 45 Dells. I drive it on 120 mile round trips regularly.
No dieseling at all.
Pull a plug or two and see how black they are.

Just had the spark plugs replaced this weekend and no change. Also, the guy that fixed it for me asked what type of fuel I was running. When I last filled up (the first time I filled it up), I put regular in it. He thinks that might be the problem. Going to run that gas out and put some higher octane in there to see what difference that makes.

Check the idle cutoff plunger. make sure the PO didn't cut it off for a failed idle cutoff valve
