Tried to smog my new Vanagon yesterday and failed miserably for a number of issues. Seems the previous owner did a half ass hot smog to register it and sell it. The shop has a $1450 estimate to get it repaired. Anyway they say it has the wrong year intake manifold with the egr port blocked off and may not pass smog unless I have the referee approve it. My question would be were could I find the correct intake manifold if the referee doesn’t accept it?

83 2.0

FED ? CAL ?

I don't really know but my guess is you have one of the last year air cooled. CV engine. same like the bay

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2497361

but you probably will also need other components that probably have been removed. Again baywindows buses 79 use a CV engine.

And if you have a California specs, well that's an other beast.

I really fail to follow the smog rules.

Sniff it?
Does if fall within year guidelines? Pass it.

Does it not meet the guidelines? Fail it.

Who cares if it is all original or if there are hamsters in a wheel making it go?
They care more about 49 year old emission control technology being there than the end result flowing out of the tail pipe!

Find an intake plenum in thesamba classified section?

Is the issue the lack of EGR port or entire EGR system?

The air cooled AFC manual shows some detail on the EGR systems. IIRC, there's 2 types. A 'net search should lead you to a link for a PDF of that AFC manual.

Would decoding the VIN help?

It’s CA smog, but the vin history looks like it lived in Oregon most of its life. So no smog. It’s still at the shop getting the visual smog issues addressed, hopefully tomorrow call the “Smog Referee” to see if they will allow it or not. Otherwise the shop said parts are hard to come by and a pain to change.

If you need parts, the Bay Window classifieds may have what you need. e.g. :

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php...ton=Search

The Federal and CA intake plenum may be the same but as you're likely finding, sourcing EGR parts is likely a PITA.
