Friday Details: October 1, 2021
Webpage Here: https://vwispwest.com/2021-type-3-rally-friday/
On Friday’s drive we’ll explore the mountain roads above Los Angeles. We’ll start at Dodger Stadium and then take the Arroyo Seco Parkway, the world’s first freeway, to Pasadena. Then we’ll head north past Rose Bowl Stadium to La Cañada where the legendary Angeles Crest Highway begins. We’ll climb 5000 ft. to Mount Wilson Observatory where we’ll stop for a break and the panoramic view of greater Los Angeles. From there we’ll head down Big Tujunga Canyon, one of LA’s best kept driving secrets, and then hop on a scenic part of Interstate 210 and State Route 2 through the Verdugo Range and back down into LA proper. We’ll end Friday’s drive at the LA Zoo in Griffith Park.
Map:
Route Distance (Miles): Roughly 100 Miles
Driver's Meeting: 7:00AM
Group Departs: 7:30AM
Turn-by-Turn Directions Here (might vary slightly day of drive):
https://vwispwest.com/friday/friday-route-turn-by-turn-directions/
Drive Highlights:
- Angeles Crest Highway
- Mount Wilson Observatory
- Newcombs Ranch
- Big Tujunga Canyon
Be Prepared:
- This route is not that easy. Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy and safe to drive.
- Your brakes better be good to go...er...stop.
- Have a full tank of gas at the start. There are only a couple spots before we head up Angeles Crest Highway.
- There are a few short freeway entrances. Be ready to merge.
- Angeles Crest Highway has a lot of motorcycles and super cars on it. Stay alert.
- There are many turn outs on the way up to Mt. Wilson. Stop if you need to.
- The climb is pretty steep. Again, stop if you need to at one of the many turn outs.
- There are public bathrooms up in the Mt. Wilson area.
- Be ready to lead a group. There's always a chance that we will get split up at a stoplight or turn. Don't panic. Follow the directions and you'll be good to go.
FOOD: We highly recommend packing your lunch/snacks/drinks/water. There aren't many fast food spots on our route, but there are some great spots for a quick picnic lunch during one of the breaks.
Meeting Point:
Address: 1351 Academy Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90012, USA
Ending Point:
Address: Zoo Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90027, USA (See detailed map for location)

More news for the Rally!
We're super stoked to announce that 100% of the money raised for the Type 3 Rally Raffle will be donated to Golden Years Dog Sanctuary. They rescue and foster older puppers and "give them a last loving home in which to thrive." They also rescue cats as well. Just a great organization overall and we hope we can raise some good money for a good cause. There are some great raffle prizes that have been donated by some great people. We'll be selling tickets all weekend and will be pulling winners on Sunday.
If you'd like to donate some items for the raffle, we'd love that! Send me an email and we'll get it on the list. [email protected]
You can find out more about Golden Years Dog Sanctuary and donate directly here:

Hey Mike, fasty is looking great! (or was that from our last Rally?) Several folks have been asking me about it.
Looks like I will miss it this year. My fasty engine is not ready (my fault for a late start), and I'm picking up a '69 Westy in San Diego Saturday.
Take lots of photos, guys! I should be ready for the invasion next June; sorry to miss this one, different than past years, but looks like it will be a blast. |

I'll keep it in mind, and of course it depends how the 200 mile trek in an unfamiliar new purchase (with 6 inches of steering wheel play, fun!)goes... fingers crossed! |

I don't have a running Type 3 but I would like to attend the Sunday events at
El Dorado Park.
What is the estimated time for the Car Show and raffle?
I would love to see some cars. |

So bummed on this one. I grew up in Palmdale, and these roads were my favorite to drive. we dont have world class driving roads like those here near Tahoe... you would think we would... but its always too clogged with tourists and rich buttheads who dont know how to drive their supercars..
I have a surgery coming up and it conspired against me coming down there. If it happens next year down there again I will make it happen.
so bummed |

The drive on Sunday should be a little shorter, but there are a few stops...one for breakfast and another photo stop. I'd say the best guesstimate for a time frame is probably 12:30-1. We don't have a specific spot, but I'll try to post on Instagram and Facebook where we're at in the park once we get situated. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

Here's a couple I snagged today from 2 of our stops at a turn out on our way to Mt. Wilson and a line up when we reached the top.

I could’t make today’s rally, driving my new bus home from San Diego. But I DID honk and wave on the 405 as I drove north by ISPwest’s turnoff!

Ok, I’m going to try to get to marina del Rey by 7. It will be close. But worth the try! Hopefully there will be t-Shirts and magnets left, but in any case lots of type 3s and good folks!
I’ll be in a white Audi suv but decorated with our club magnet logos so you can recognize me. |
