Just found out that my Type 4 motor does not have the flaps that go on each side of the cooling tin. How important is this on cooling the motor? I am not running any heater boxes and do not have any heat or defrosters. |

It makes no difference on cooling the engine down but it makes a big difference on getting it to warm up properly, stay warm enough, hold a tune and to the lifespan of the engine. The thermostat and flaps have nothing to do with heat and defrost and everything to do with keeping the engine at the correct temperature under changing load and weather conditions. Any effects on the heating system are incidental, not intentional.
Find all the correct parts and adjust them properly. Your engine will thank you by running better and lasting longer. _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. (The mass media age) |

You will also need a 85-90C thermostat, pulley, and cable to open and close the flaps. I believe you can still get the thermostats new from Awesome Powder Coat. |

I see you are in Arizona....even in the desert your engine would benefit from having those installed. Start sourcing out parts. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

The flap on the left side is very important to have as it directs air flow to the oil cooler. Without it being there air will flow will cross over top of oil cooler and and not down through it.
Hopefully you have the tin in place that sits on top of and under lip of fan housing. _________________ Joseph

Exactly. It might be worth tracking down a stock setup. |
