Is there some trick to getting the rubber fuel flap onto a '73 coupe? At first I thougth about taking th efuel filler tube out, but there are vent tubes going out from it that would stop the rubber from sliding on. Do I have to just stretch the flap around the top of the filler tube and nudge it down into the gap? Thanks. |

It's a royal pain in the @$$, but with a screwdriver and some patience, it is possible. I hope I never have to do it again. _________________ oo9less since 2007

On a related topic, can anyone point me toward a picture of the underside of the fuel filler door? I am trying to get the spring installed and none of the orientations seem to be right. Either the spring barely moves the door, or it bends in some pretty funky ways that don't seem good. |

From the Samba Classifieds:
^^Correct for 1969-1974. 1968 is a little different. _________________ ****************************

I can't even get the old flap out! I've been pulling and hacking it away, but it has hardened and molded itself tightly around the neck. Not looking forward to the new flap going in... _________________ https://www.youtube.com/user/stigstorms/videos

I just did mine. Let it sit in the sun and spray with silicone. I used vice grips and a pick. Plug your gas hole with something and go to town. You can't ruin anything. I even pushed some bits down through the fender.
It's easy to get on. Just take your time. Heat it up in the sun. Use some silicone and Have a beer. _________________ '74 Ghia Vert SOLD |

Thanks for the input, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I like your last recommendation trelms, though I may need a beer first thing as well _________________ https://www.youtube.com/user/stigstorms/videos

There sure is some expensive rubber parts for the gas door installation. I went old school, welded a cover over the filler neck and installed a '67 gas tank.

I only have done this once .It was when I putting the car back together after its body off Paint and rebuild. The tube was already out and the flap went in super easy and the tube slid in super easy. Seems to make sense to disconnect the tube and slide it out of the way first. Make sure the body grommet is good shape or get a new one. Probably a good time to replace the tube > tank hose as well.
Palmolive is the lube for me, on rubber that is. |

I'm about to embark on this job and wondered if the hive mind had any new approaches to this challenge in the past 5 years. From what I can summarize:
- Plug the hole with something (rags?)
- destroy the old one getting it out if you have to. No harm in that.
- Putting on the new one:
*let it sit in the sun to get warm (not an option for me as we enter the fall/winter). Alternatives - soak in cold water? Soak in Amorall?
* lube it with spit, Palmolive (dish soap) or silicone spray
* push it on over the hole with vice grips, pick, small screwdriver, fingers, toes
- patience and beer(s) are necessary
Any updated suggestions? Thx |

I've put rubbery stuff in boiling water and gave it awhile. Soft and pliable. This works well for rear bump stops just give them a longer boil _________________ Daily driver: '69 Baja owned 44 yrs - Plan B: '81 Rabbit Diesel LS Deluxe - Plan C: '72 Ghia

I just did mine on my '69. Wasn't hard at all. I thought the bump stops were harder. I just took a screwdriver and loosened the large grommet at the neck. Kept moving it until it came out intact. Used some lubricant in the new flap grommet to get it back in place with a nudge from a plastic tool and watching from underneath until the grommet ridge came through. Kind of "easy peasy" on mine.

I thought this was answered in another thread.
Spray the entire seal with silicone lube. Top and bottom (underneath the fender). Using a pry tool, pry the seal off. Now, if the seal has been on the filler neck for the last 50 years or more. Use a utility knife and cut it off carefully without cutting yourself etc....
The new seal will just slide on the filler neck. Use again the silicone lube.
Here is some pic's;
