Hi everyone,
Recently purchased a 1992 Eurovan camper, 2.5l.
Looks like head gasket is blown - there is water in the oil, which just looks like grey sludge by now.
Before the gasket issue there was a coolant leak from the flange that is just under the coolant overflow tank, but it stopped after tightening. Soon after, though, water started spurting everywhere when cranking.
I checked the pressure in the cylinders and getting 150-125-140-150-125.
Do you think it is definitely the head gasket, or is there some other possible reason?
Any advice or insight will be much appreciated. |

wrt/water in oil, could be a bad oil cooler. It sits above the oil filter. Try to rule that out before taking anything else apart. |

Thanks for that, indeed it looks like most of the liquid exchange was coming from the oil cooler. We bypassed the oil cooler and it seems to have stopped the water coming into the oil problem.
While looking a bit more it looks like a faulty thermostat started it all. Does it make sense to think that after the thermostat failed an increase in heat and pressure led the oil cooler to leak?
We conducted more testing on the engine and three of the cylinders push pressure into the cooling system, so I think the head gasket still needs to be replaced.
I have seen a few posts from people saying they think it is easier to pull the whole engine off than to replace the gasket while leaving the engine block in place. Is that right? It still looks like it would be easier to do it with the engine in.. |

It’s 9.8 hours in the book, engine in.
I don’t think you can get the engine out in 10 let alone do the gasket _________________ .ssS! |
