FWIW Mitchell produces block diagrams where you see a single topic but out of context to the overall picture. They are useful in understanding a system if well done.
VW uses current flow diagrams. Single systems are shown in context to the vehicle but require more study and understanding of the vehicle and may require following multiple links to multiple pages with note taking.
Personally if only allowed to have one I would choose current flow. Both are are useful and are complementary.

The type of diagram shown can require you to chase wires from page to page to page and if and when you blow it can cause all kinds of confusion. The VW current track schematics are way easier to use once you get used to them, as most of the wires you are going to be interested are going to be on one or two pages mostly grouped together.

This seller also offered some diagrams for later year Vanagons.
I bought a couple and was disappointed by the number of errors in the diagrams.

These are sets of a few pages cut out of large books and sold by year.
The diagram style is easier to follow in part due to a lack of some of the detail found in the Bentley diagrams.

I used to prefer the older style diagrams of colored lines.
Then I learned the newer diagrams......

I don't even like the old diagrams anymore, even for the old simple Type 1!
