Hey All -
I had the mechanic replace the master brake cylinder in my 68 bug. Since then my #1 fuse has blown twice.
I'm wondering if the wires related to #1 are near the master cylinder and they could have inadvertently disturbed something? I am wanting to go back and say, "hey this wasn't an issue until you all did this repair job."
Any thoughts?
Thanks! |

Welcome!
Since fuse #1 powers the brake lights I'll bet your mechanic didn't quite get the wiring on the brake switches right. A 68 uses 3 separate switches, most replacement MC's only have provisions for the later 2 switch system, the conversion is possible, but requires electrical knowledge. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thanks for the input. They are a well known shop in my town, and work on these cars all the time so I am surprised they would mess this up.
I don't want to be driving around without brake lights and turn signals, both of which are not working (as well as the fuel gauge) every time the fuse blows.
So they have to mess with the wiring when they replace the master cylinder?

Just because they work on them all the time doesn't mean they fully understand the German way of thinking about some of the more oddball systems on some models. Step one is ask them why the fuse is blowing and if they plan on fixing it, if that gets sideways we can coach you through a fix here if you don't mind getting your hands a little dirty.
And solving the fuse problem without making sure the brake failure warning light on the dash still works is not an option, fix it properly or stop saying you know vintage VW's. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
