Looking good! |
Thanks! Happy to report it passed inspection! Another 12 months of worry-free driving await!
Just got back from the drive. No pics, but I did stop at Buggy Man in Lorton and scored a German head light relay, a complete set of rear seat belts for this puppy, and an original turn signal and headlight switch assembly for $35 bucks! Not bad, even though the cancelling spring is gone from the switch. Still better than a Chinesium switch. All the wire connections looked good and everything clicked properly going up and down. Into the parts stash! _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Looks good!!
Did it pass?
My last inspection in Virginia, the kid asked what kind of car is it.
They usually spend about a hour, 10 minutes later I had paid & was to the car.
I think he was totally lost! |

That is a fun read. Some crazy stories in there! I think it's fair to say that my knock-off Kamei spoiler definitely helps handling. I never had any squirliness from the car feeling like it wants to fly even when I hit 90mph. Still...I like the feel of 65. _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

1000 mile round trip + what ever on the salt.
600 of it on I-80 @75 MPH
30MPG and 1/2 qt of oil
9 hours continuous driving one way
Dry on the3 salt this year not much cleaning to do
Not even much salt on the floor mats

I had my 1973 Beetle inspected on Friday. I watched the kid trying to find reverse with amusement. The shop guys were impressed with the Dellortos. I filled it up too and got 25.6 mpg. Great considering I have done no tuning since installing these carbs.

Took a trip out to the "Lake" or should I say "Creek"? Drought has returned Folsom Lake to its original state, the American river, hoping for an exceptional rainy season this year.
Took this at the lowest possible boat ramp, on a normal year this would be 40 or 50 ft under water.
The view from the top.
Everything behind the Bug should be filled with water. Going to pray hard for rain for the next 7 months. |

I pulled some overdue maintenance because I must fit the stereotype of the mechanic who drives a shitty car😀 so I got all busy by gapping and cleaning the points. Broke out the Bosch grease for the rubbing block and oiled the felt wick.
Moving on to the plugs every plug was loose upon further examination none of the crush washers was fully deformed. Holy shit I forgot to tighten them about 8 or 10 years ago when I built it, and I’ve been driving hard about 8,000 miles. Are these cars tough or what?
So installed new NGK plugs and crushed the washer, all good. Checking the oil I was about halfway mark on dipstick so I topped it off with this oil I had left over, I’d normally use 10w30. Took the car for a spin and it seemed to run better according to the seat-o- meter.
I checked fan belt and it seemed loose but I decided to run the engine and get up to temp. Checked again and it was right, expansion 😀
I can’t remember building this engine and I wonder what else I didn’t tighten. Think I’ll just keep running the piss out of it.

It could be worse Jim.
I forgot to torque a rod cap on my 1600 SP a year ago.
19:43 into the break in. I heard a loud rod knock. I shut down right away.
On the tear down I found the loose rod cap. Torqued to the proper spec and re-assmebled that turd. Funny thing.
The rod bearing didn't have any damage.
Yep, ACVW's are tough little suckers!
The engine is going into my 67 for this winter. _________________ I have learned over the years.

I got out today for no better reason than I’d call mental therapy of mixed city and highway driving.
I like this it contains a bunch of Woody’s things.
Had to wait for the train, long enough even to take a picture.
Now you know for damn sure on a nice cloudless day of low 90s temps that I’m gonna put my foot down and I may have intimidated a late model Dodge Challenger.
Or maybe they are putting distance between themselves and some crazy bastard in the old VW. |

I went out for a spin this morning, and stopped by a local resort to snap a "retro" pic!
Then I saw a grizzly sow with her cub from this year. I got this pic of the cub while sitting in my bug. _________________ Where would this hobby be if no one shipped parts.

Cool! I've come face to face with a standing brown bear, that was bad enough, but grizzly's are something else!! _________________ Repeat after me "I am smarter than metal!" |

Was walking out to my truck, and the 77 was sitting there, all lonely in the dark carport, nobody to play with.
Fired on the first attempt, headlights came right on, and we were off
