Bought bumpers for a 1950 bug and they are bare steel. Today I asked in a famous shop in Bogotá that tunes and restores classic cars and they say they do a plating which is triple nickel, but it costs about 400 dollars each, very expensive. Then I went to a friend's shop that only restores classic cars to original and he says the best chrome plating is copper, and didn't say price.
What do you think about this? |

A serious chrome plating is very time consuming due to all different steps.
First they make the bumper blade perfect, straight and really smooth.
Then copper plating- and polish, and then maybe more copper and polish to a perfect mirror shine..
After the polished copper is done it´s time for nickelplating- and then polish again.
And last 1, 2 or 3 layers of chrome. |

what he said.
there is always copper to make it smooth, then nickel to make it shine, and chrome to protect the nickel. Nickel is what makes it silver. _________________ regards

$400 to plate a bumper is not out of line. |

In the USA that would be about $1500 to half ass the plating. I know everything is relative, but really $400 is so cheap. I paid $400 in 1970 to chrome a bumper. |
