… neither of my '55s have a cardboard liner - are you sure '55s had one? Neither did our '54 - I tend, not to think so - z

'54 and '55 had the same, three-piece hardboard liners, stapled together with round wire.

On this side of the pond I bought one from Wolfgang Gips in Germany and it was excellent quality, can highly recommend his.

Glad non na' my early ovals had a trunk-liner - pretty ugly...

… I bought an early '55, that was very, very original, in 1975 - from the original owner and it too, had no trunk-liner like the one pictured - think i'll remain blissfully-ignorent and profess that no trunk liner was used - z

This is great information.
Now, what kind of felt below the cardboard?

Pic of og felt in my old 55. It is a very original NZ assembled 55 with a very crude but original motometer gauge cluster install. I took this pic when I was going through the frail old cloth wiring on the motometer gauges. The felt is a tar felt mix similar to stuff you'll find under the rear seat.

I am actually not aware of a difference between zwitter and early oval.

Made of grey cardboard just as the original ones.
I have a split one from him and it is a close match.

His name is Wolfgang Gips.

Got my trunk liner installed today. This trunk liner was made by Wolfgang Gips. I can not say enough how pleased I am with this trunk liner. Very high quality. Nancy (nlorntson) was kind enough to pick it up for me while she was at HO this year. Wolfgang left it unassembled so that it could be carried on the plane (and around Europe under Nancy's arm). Wolfgang installed the vertical staples in place so all I had to do was remove staples align the panels and punch holes in the passenger side panel (thats why they look so nice and straight opposed to the horizontal staples which I had to mark & punch. All the staples were then bent over manually.

One handy hint when installing the trunk liner, cover the gas tank. As I slid the liner in place it scratched the paint on the tank. I think I will put heavy black duct tape over the staples on the underside the next time I remove the liner...if I ever do.

You could probably make a reasonable copy of this felt, using a large piece of rectangular material that is open-weave such as felt, sisal, layered burlap, etc. Approx. 1/4" to 1/2" thick. The front edge goes straight across the trunk, coming close to the gas tank rear vertical face. The rear edge you can gauge per the above photo, then make cutouts and slots for the speedometer and choke cables. It sits flat between the wheelwell humps. Lay it flat on a large piece of cardboard and spray it evenly with either rubberized undercoating spray can, or even the black Flex-Seal spray. When dry on the one side, turn it over and spray the other side.
