Hi guys I'm running a 1916cc motor in my 61 bus and its not liking the hot weather, I'm getting temps around 260F on the highway with in 20 mins driving on a hot day (84f)

1. Which non-external cooler do you have now?

2. Which crankshaft pulley?

3. Which gen/alt pulley?

4. What size cooling fan (inside measurement)?

I don't have a external cooler on the motor just the internal one.
Pulleys are stock original ones both top and bottom.
Internal fan is also stock.

There are different stock parts.

Make sure you have a dog house fan shroud along with the correct fan, oil cooler and pulleys. Having a non-dog house fan will not cool correctly.[/quote
They are the right parts as Stan built the motor.

1. Which is why we asked "Which non-external cooler do you have now?". Non = not. There are three possibilities of stock coolers you could have installed internally.

2. Stock crankshaft pulleys changed outside diameters over the years. Some years getting smaller and some years getting bigger. Bigger OD pulley means higher fan RPM speed in-comparison to the crankshaft RPM, for more air pumped over the engine. Smaller OD means less air....

3. Stock VW gen/alt pulley is larger than the stock Porsche 356 gen/alt pulley for more fan RPM than the stock VW one. See above for what higher fan RPM gives you...

4. As both compression was raised and cubic centimeters of each generation of VW engine increased so did the fan change. Widened a little each time and even the number of fan blades increased in number. EG if you used a stock single port 1500/1600 cc engine fan in an engine with dual port dog house cooler/shroud system, you are going to have a whole lot of cooling engine problem.

So if you could answer the 1, 2, & 4 questions....

So the fan and both pulleys were for a 1600cc twin port motor. I will measure the pulleys to get a dia. Internal oil cooler I don't know as Stan would have supplied that part but it does have a dog house tin on.

Sounds like Stan needs to answer your questions and reassure you that the oil temps are OK and will warranty any problems.

I will talk to him again, the temps do drop once i get off the freeway so maybe it is a fan/airflow issue.

Yes, what's up??

Twin ports AKA dual port engines came out with 33 mm wide fan (inside measurement), later a 34 mm wide fan, then the last was a 35 mm wide fan. So you could have one of three fans in there...

You also need to get the carb/s jetted just right. While it might run too lean at a certain RPM, it could be running way too lean at another RPM.

My oil temps went up about 20*F when I put a freeway flyer in my bus. Smaller generator pulley may help Or a bigger crank pulley. Or both. A 7" crank pulley, 356 Generator pulley and smallest 13 mm belt you can get on it will give you the highest fan speed.

Ideally you want a welded and balanced 71+ (widest) cooling fan and the appropriate dog house fan shroud/housing.

Atomic-cool brand plate type oil cooler works well if the pulleys/fan don't solve the issue. Use a thermostatic switch on the fan.

I'm not a fan of Empi products either, as we all know their typical quality, but I did use their oil cooler/fan setup. I have it ~mid bus on the drivers side, ran with stainless braided teflon hose, a thermostatic oil filter sandwich plate, and a thermostatic fan switch... Never had an issue with it and it makes a noticeable difference... And got it new at bug-o for a good price...

sorry for the late reply, I did end up changing out the top gen pulley to a Porsche 356 one and it made a big difference in temp, doesnt get above 225 now.
