Ha, ha - there was once a thread on this and I knew the answer, but forgot, by now - my guess is the open one is for a type one, through ( at least) 1958 as that metal-conduit was not used on later shrouds, but instead the ignition wires fed through rubber eyelets, mounted on the shroud - someone will know, eventually - I'll keep looking - z _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

… and I asked Eric, at Bughaus, where I buy my parts and he also, was not quite positive, but said it goes by end-flange size and he thought the one with the smaller flange, was correct for a '54- I looked in my VW, 1958 parts book and no mention of flange size, but did indicate , the same part was used in a type 2...
… i'll bet, it was a running change - not mentioned anywhere - z _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Nothing on this part mentioned in Progressive Refinements. What I recall is that there also was a difference in the clamps for the conduit. If the front facing piece had a nut on the end it was later design. I doubt there would have been a difference between a Beetle vs Bus conduit. Why would that have been purposeful? _________________ Roads Scholar &

… like I said, that conduit musta' been a running change in production and not worth noting any where in PR or better yet, by Garwood, in Car of the Century - the smaller flange appears to be the older one - z _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

Just to confirm even though it's in the thread above:
'54 would be the clamps with the machine screw/nut
All of the tin would have the welded-on nuts too. |
I read through those threads got the impression the clamp change was between 25hp and 36hp. If the nut continued into 54 on the 36hp then I wonder when the change happened. Progressive refinements does not mention anything to do with tins. |
It's definitely early 36hp too but not sure exactly when it changed.
I believe sometime in 1955 but I haven't tried to research it fully.
It may be talked about in the 54-55 engine thread

Open vs. closed seams and whether weld nuts are on the tube clamps have been covered previously.
Also, the length of the wire entry slot and width of the flared ends vary by year.
For the record, both Feb '54 and Dec '54 tubes are identical, with open seams. _________________ Thanks,
