I keep seeing conflicting arguments re GL4 vs GL5 and I don't know what's right or wrong. Can't afford to replace the tranny if I use the wrong stuff.

I could use some help on this. And I can't find any GL4 rated gear oil within 50 miles of me. I'll mail-order if I need to.

What should I be using?

Thank you, everyone.

GL-5 meets all the requirements for GL-4.

If you really want so-called real GL-4, order online.

If you have any doubt, most Napa auto parts can get Sta-Lube 80/90 that is GL4. Summit Racing has Penn Grade, and Driven gear oil in GL4 as well.

"somewhere" online I read that early GL-5 was a little more corrosive to brass parts in a transmission, but that nowadays modern GL-5 gear oils don't do that. Can someone confirm that?

I can confirm that your old VW bug transaxle doesn’t get hot enough for GL5 to be a problem

Just get the Redline MT-90 Full Synthetic G-4 from Amazon. Get three quarts and get a hand pump while you’re at it.

Lets just use the existing gear oil topic.
