I haven't done this on a swing axle car, just IRS. I found I needed to disconnect the shifter coupler under the back seat to help it slide back
good luck |

Some times the nuts/bolts that attach the axel tubes to the spring plates need to be loosened also. Try and make a mark on the flange and spring plate so adjustment will be close. |

You were both correct. I unhooked the shifter and both axles, and the clutch cable. Glad it’s done, and that I don’t have to do again anytime soon! I put in some beefy mounts from CB. Got new boots on as well.
Thanks you guys.

A big shout out to Bug City. The guy, didn’t get his name, was super helpful and had all the parts I needed to get all the thermostat/flaps stuff with hardware. Everything arrived in excellent condition and bolted right in.
I’ll say that Bug City and CB have been the most knowledgeable in my recent parts buying spree. Some others have all the parts, but unless you want to be an inch off the deck with 200 hp they aren’t real helpful over the phone.

If you don't want your new boots to start leaking, the seams should be at either 3 or 9 o clock (ie parallel to the ground), so that the "accordion" part of the boot is doing the stretching and shrinking. Where you have them, you're forcing the seam to do the stretching and it's guaranteed to eventually leak. _________________ Currently own:

I’ve got another greenhorn question. I’m shimming my generator and have watched all the YouTube I can find. My fan hub on the generator shaft starts rubbing on the generator body as soon as I begin tightening the fan bolt. The fan appears to be not rubbing anywhere. I must be missing something. The whole pile of shims was installed when I took it apart, with about 10 on the generator side. I haven’t seen anyone using this many shims. Any advice or threads on this topic?
Thanks, Dan

I bought a new generator that was listed for a ‘73 bug (I have a ‘73 engine). It’s different from what’s in the car. The new one on the left does not have the small silver collar that the fan bolt assembly rides on. It has a groove around the shaft that makes the fan bolt/collar fide completely on the wide generator body flange.
Here’s a picture of one that looks like mine, it’s listed for a Type 3.

Got out the brake cleaner and a big wire brush and found the ID#. It’s a Model 101 302 085. I found a Bosch replacement in Missouri. I’ve got my fingers crossed. The fan end looks like mine.

It looks like there’s supposed to be some foam/gasket material on the oil cooler itself. I’ve got some black closed cell stuff and a 2-piece kit from Heritage coming for the tin, gbut I haven’t seen what’s on the cooler. Any ideas/photos/links?
Thanks, Dan
