As part of the fan belt exploding and engine getting hot on my 78 vert, I found this spring hanging unattached at one end. The 2nd photo shows my guess at the only place I could see it might attach to. I'm guessing it aids in the return of the accelerator. Thanks for your help!

Correct on both accounts, it went to that bracket on the EGR valve, and you'll have to do some bending on the end with strong pliers to reshape a new hook.

Late models required two throttle return springs to comply with some DOT mandate, it's not a bad idea compared to the experience of a jammed throttle and the excitement that brings.
