I've had one in the past and was pleased with the simplicity of it.

I chose to keep my coolant based transmission oil cooler on this 90 because I was feeling cheap........

The FAS oil cooler runs $300 ........

I like that there are no oil lines to worry about leaking or getting snagged on something.
I am not a hard user who pushes the transmission to its operating limits.

I am battling coolant leaks and one of the leaks is the mid run Tee which feeds the stock cooler.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=759312

I could easily replace that hose but I wonder if I am being short sighted and should just eliminate it altogether.

But $300 for a chunk of Aluminum.......

This isn't the type of item you find used in junk yards either...... it is new bite the $$ bullet or go without.

A decision for this weekend ....... $300 or not......
sssh...... (Anyone have one and HATES it?)

I think a big reason for water cooling the ATF is to keep the ATF temperature somewhat stable, consistent, for consistent transmission performance.

Yeah.... I was all set to pull it but I am now wondering about the wisdom of NOT running it in the Winter. How will the trans function without the warming provided by the cooler.

Will not having the fluid warmed be detrimental?

I think a good replacement might be a dual circuit oil cooler. With, without fan or simply boxed-in. A win win. The water and oil are much safer when each has its own conduit, yet they will share temperature.

I'd use a liquid heat exchanger and then a radiator with a thermostatically controlled fan reading the oil temps. I think your point, Dave, about running without cooling in the winter makes sense. The fan or water pump for the oil cooling could be switched off when temps get low.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

These marine heat exchangers used for various things are a dime a dozen at boat consignment shops. I'd use a separate coolant with an expansion tank and an electric pump. A radiator with a fan all controlled by an oil temp sending unit. Elaborate? Perhaps, but would give the best control.

So playing with belts.

I’ve noticed that the stock length alternator belt maxes out the adjustment travel.
I’ve found that the P/S belt fits perfectly (jump
It over the pulley edge) the jump Over the edge is minor, I’ve no damage concerns.
Currently have NAPA Premium XL 25-7435 on both the alternator and the Power Steering.
My spare I carry is a Dayco 15430.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

My A/C has the same maximum adjustment issue running the suggested NAPA Premium XL 25-9455. 1/2” x 45 7/8” long.
I picked up a Dayco 17450 1/2”. 45” long

Here they are side by side

This belt needed to be jumped on too but again not a major damaging amount.
Hopefully now that I can tighten it properly the A/C belt squeal will go away!

And……..

Just when you thought it was safe to park in a million $$ house driveway…….

Drips!!!!!

Now coming from my temperature gauge bung I put in the trans oil pan!
Not sure if it is the bung itself or the sender.
So……
Step #1 I resealed the Bung.

And…..
My engine oil drain plug drips. This I knew all along but it was minor on the do it now scale.
I have a copper washer on the plug which I had drilled and enlarged to an 18mm because of a buggered stripped thread by a PO.
I fear I was not 100% perpendicular when I drilled hence the plug doesn’t 100% seat flat.
I need to get some more “squishy” fiber washers before the next oil change. But I just changed the oil a few hundred miles ago.
I cleaned the plug well and smeared it with “the right stuff” until the next oil change.

I am so weary of fixing leaks!!!!

All is good up top. Yes there is a vent.
No build up of gunk to clog it and cap moves around well.

My trans top is as dry as my spare trans in this photo.

Ok….. went for a very pleasant Sunday Drive!

Got home, let it cool off ……

Engine drain plug? Absolutely dry.

The temperature sender is leaking at the threads into the bung.

You can see my slather of “the right stuff” I applied to the bung to pan connection to help locate where it is leaking from …. Baby steps….

I pulled the trans temp sender today.

Let the ATF drain out again.

Cleaned up the threads and used a smear of Plumbers thread dope on them. Didn't want to use thread teflon tape for we certainly do NOT need any of that stuff floating around inside!

Screwed it in, refilled and went for a short ride just to get the ATF level proper.

Time will tell......

Changed the Prius' ATF too...... 70,000 miles..... way past due!

Knock on wood .........

Just got back from a much longer trip.

All is dry!

We will see what the morning brings as things cool off and contract.

The oil plug leak fix ended up being my drain plug not fully seating into the case plug recess.
A bit of file work and a 16mm x 2.5mm Oring on the base of the 18mm threads.

You know?

We had the remnants of Ida blow through here a few weeks ago, winds howling, trees swaying and 7.7” of rain.

One branch broke off.

Today we get a simple rain event, windy, but not extreme, rain but only 2 3/4” so we staying home.

As the storm wound down we took the Prius and went to the apple orchard for cider and donuts.

We came home and couldn't see the garage!
In our absence a tree fell across the yard hitting the house hard enough to knock things off of shelves!

I've been parking the Van there a lot as I've combatted various leaks...... but didn't today........

Whew!

Don't worry djkeev, I'm pretty sure your van is so happy to be working for a living with you rather than languishing on some lot in Philadelphia that it would have dodged that tree all by itself.

Wait it did when you parked it (he? she?) closer to the house.

Serendipity!

Name your van yet? Or, better in my mind, ready to put a business name on it/him/her?

Well, there went a weekend with no real advancement, just fighting to get back where we were before the tree came down!
My daughter came over, my Wife babysat and we knocked the crown of the tree off.
The lower trunk had a 26 year old poison Ivy vine about 2 1/2” in diameter!
Biggest I ever saw.
I carefully removed the vine before cutting the log up.
Nothing worse than poison Ivy chips all over!

Ready to start the week….. already tired and it is only Sunday …….

Two questions (because I am too lazy to dig through all 41 pages):

What size fuse did you end up using in the fused relay for the fuel pump?

Now that you have some miles on them, IIRC you had a couple different CV boots installed. How are they holding up?

Thanks,

Erik

I put 10 amp fuses in my relays.

Both sets of axle boots are doing well.
No signs of failure on either brand.

Given a choice? I like the VW boots fit better. More snug on the axles shaft.

My Van has simply been functioning as it should.
In other threads I’ve posted about chasing leaks and coolant level concerns.
I just ordered a new ignition coil because of a suspect heat sink malfunction ….. but it is October now, heat sink really isn’t a concern.
I threw in a spark plug wire set and rear wheel bearing seals too …… just because. My spares box isn’t full enough I guess?

the Van is Pushing the 10,000 mile mark since it went on the Highway back in March 2021.

Knock on wood (or touch wood for you Brits) it is doing well.

It still garners attention and keeps making new friends.

It seems everyone, except the impatient A-hole behind me on hills, loves the Van and thinks it is a really cool vehicle.
The other day I came out of the food store and a guy was standing there waiting for me to return so he could talk about the Van.
He said “There is SO MUCH SPACE INSIDE!
This would make a great camper!” 😂😂
I should have thought of that! 🙄

It is still the only one that I’ve seen driving in the Reading Pa area, though some say they have seen another.

I did find another old carpenter working out of a VW Rabbit Pickup truck. My unit is heads and shoulders above him! I have 12’ interior product capacity and dry inside storage!

Off to NJ tomorrow. I don’t venture all that far from home anymore. It will be a fun little journey to get away and exercise the Van.
