Automatic Transmission cooler.......
FAS
I've had one in the past and was pleased with the simplicity of it.
I chose to keep my coolant based transmission oil cooler on this 90 because I was feeling cheap........
The FAS oil cooler runs $300 ........
http://www.foreignautosupply.com/parts-accessories/1-automatic-transmission-heat-sink/#.YTvSurIpChA
I like that there are no oil lines to worry about leaking or getting snagged on something.
I am not a hard user who pushes the transmission to its operating limits.
I am battling coolant leaks and one of the leaks is the mid run Tee which feeds the stock cooler.

I could easily replace that hose but I wonder if I am being short sighted and should just eliminate it altogether.
But $300 for a chunk of Aluminum.......
This isn't the type of item you find used in junk yards either...... it is new bite the $$ bullet or go without.
A decision for this weekend ....... $300 or not......
sssh...... (Anyone have one and HATES it?)

I think a big reason for water cooling the ATF is to keep the ATF temperature somewhat stable, consistent, for consistent transmission performance. |

I think a good replacement might be a dual circuit oil cooler. With, without fan or simply boxed-in. A win win. The water and oil are much safer when each has its own conduit, yet they will share temperature.

I'd use a liquid heat exchanger and then a radiator with a thermostatically controlled fan reading the oil temps. I think your point, Dave, about running without cooling in the winter makes sense. The fan or water pump for the oil cooling could be switched off when temps get low.
These marine heat exchangers used for various things are a dime a dozen at boat consignment shops. I'd use a separate coolant with an expansion tank and an electric pump. A radiator with a fan all controlled by an oil temp sending unit. Elaborate? Perhaps, but would give the best control. |

And……..
Just when you thought it was safe to park in a million $$ house driveway…….
Drips!!!!!
Now coming from my temperature gauge bung I put in the trans oil pan!
Not sure if it is the bung itself or the sender.
So……
Step #1 I resealed the Bung.
And…..
My engine oil drain plug drips. This I knew all along but it was minor on the do it now scale.
I have a copper washer on the plug which I had drilled and enlarged to an 18mm because of a buggered stripped thread by a PO.
I fear I was not 100% perpendicular when I drilled hence the plug doesn’t 100% seat flat.
I need to get some more “squishy” fiber washers before the next oil change. But I just changed the oil a few hundred miles ago.
I cleaned the plug well and smeared it with “the right stuff” until the next oil change.
I am so weary of fixing leaks!!!!

I think there is a vent at the top of the tranny. Have you checked that it is not plugged? |

Don't worry djkeev, I'm pretty sure your van is so happy to be working for a living with you rather than languishing on some lot in Philadelphia that it would have dodged that tree all by itself.
Wait it did when you parked it (he? she?) closer to the house.
Serendipity!
Name your van yet? Or, better in my mind, ready to put a business name on it/him/her? _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

Two questions (because I am too lazy to dig through all 41 pages):
What size fuse did you end up using in the fused relay for the fuel pump?
Now that you have some miles on them, IIRC you had a couple different CV boots installed. How are they holding up?
Thanks,
Erik

My Van has simply been functioning as it should.
In other threads I’ve posted about chasing leaks and coolant level concerns.
I just ordered a new ignition coil because of a suspect heat sink malfunction ….. but it is October now, heat sink really isn’t a concern.
I threw in a spark plug wire set and rear wheel bearing seals too …… just because. My spares box isn’t full enough I guess?
the Van is Pushing the 10,000 mile mark since it went on the Highway back in March 2021.
Knock on wood (or touch wood for you Brits) it is doing well.
It still garners attention and keeps making new friends.
It seems everyone, except the impatient A-hole behind me on hills, loves the Van and thinks it is a really cool vehicle.
The other day I came out of the food store and a guy was standing there waiting for me to return so he could talk about the Van.
He said “There is SO MUCH SPACE INSIDE!
This would make a great camper!” 😂😂
I should have thought of that! 🙄
It is still the only one that I’ve seen driving in the Reading Pa area, though some say they have seen another.
I did find another old carpenter working out of a VW Rabbit Pickup truck. My unit is heads and shoulders above him! I have 12’ interior product capacity and dry inside storage!
Off to NJ tomorrow. I don’t venture all that far from home anymore. It will be a fun little journey to get away and exercise the Van.
