Hi all. I'm new to VW and recently acquired a T2 needing love. I'm building an engine that I'm pretty sure will be 1641 with new cylinders and DP heads. Prolly a mild cam as well. So.... reading around I'm seeing that there are transmission options. This is not something I had considered when I started but now I have to ask.... First, is this something to pursue? Whats the best if you have $$$$, and what kind of money? Then, whats the most reliable?

With that engine, stick with a stock geared transmission. The engineers got it right on that one. Don’t go with a taller fourth gear until you get north of around 2000cc. And then probably closer to sea level. I’m sure most on the forum will agree.

Stay stock and if you want taller gearing you don’t just change 4th, you change the ring and pinion.

I you want longer gearing, go with 27x8.5R14 or 195r14 tires and see how you like it, easy to change back to stock if you lose too much tractive effort.
