Alright the welding on the pan is done, more pics of the same haha but better than nothing. I have to say between the seam sealer, rust, dirt, and other crap I can’t get out the welding process has been less than fun - lots of popping, re cleaning, fires and smoke, dirtying up the torch, etc.
I have seam welded everything except the floor pan to tunnel seam on the inside which I have only stitch welded. I will be seam sealing this area since it is inside the passenger area and shouldn’t have the dirt/water blasting it like the bottom and exterior pan sections.
I was thinking black paint, but have been considering a grey or silver maybe? I haven’t seen many pans that weren’t black

Finished welding up the 1 million screw holes from the previous owner, along with some other random stuff, old fender mounts, antenna hole, etc.
I think one more day prepping and I can get some paint on the pan and body. Now to decide on color…

Pan is ready for primer, and the body is Getting close to ready, I’m finding a few more spots to touch with the welder but not much.
The bottom of the package tray is the last major area to clean up, I have been putting it off because it is the hardest spot to clean up…

Well i think im finished stripping the body. Working on paint selection now- thinking a single stage urethane but I have a decent amount of shopline clear and primer on the shelf so I could do BC/CC also. Not sure the bc/cc is right for this car though, it needs to be easy to repaint (not too concerned about it blending well, just scuff/spray and move on…). Obviously body work and appearance are second to durability

I wasn’t able to find any Ss urethane today (Sunday, as expected) so I made a final pass with a fine wire wheel/cup on every surface, and wiped it down with mineral spirits. It’s looking really good now, another wipe down and it’s ready to spray.
More pics of the same!

Well it’s been raining non stop all week and will all weekend… just need a dry day to lay some paint
I ended up getting some cheap ppg epoxy primer and single stage acrylic urethane (white and black), there was a hole in the dam can!

As predicted it has been raining, making it difficult to paint outside!
I have started getting some other parts ready to bolt on, I rebuilt the pedal assembly (2 actually) and painted them, will be able to assemble tomorrow.

Still bad weather for paint, it might have to wait for the next cold front.
Pedals went together without much drama (set on the left is going in this car)
Pulled all the engine parts off the shelf, I think I have everything I need to put it together. This is most of the stuff for the bottom end
Doing some final Prepping on the case, it has been sitting a few years now but it’s all full flowed, line bored, etc.

Got the crank cleaned up and started mic’ing everything up. #1 and #2 main bearing saddles are under spec about 2.577 and 2.5755, #3 is perfect, bearing IDs reflect the same condition so the case needs the line bore touched up. I could hone out #1 but #2 is a problem.
Wether looks perfect for painting this weekend coming up _________________ it's more fun loud and dirty |

Did final touch ups and wipe downs done, figured out how to hold everything so I can paint it in one go. Weather was great today but windy, the morning is supposed to be perfect so I will be up early to roll it out, hit it with a tack cloth, and let the paint fly.

So after almost 7, that’s right SEVEN years since I started this project it’s back in paint! If I manage to complete this build, will it be the longest one in HBB off-road? Not the longest running build thread with multiple iterations and redos, but start to the the initial “first drive”?
Anyways here I am ready to spray:
Some primer shots:
Seam sealer (misplaced my dispenser so I cut the tube open and spread it by hand… less than ideal hahahah)
Black on the wheel wells, fire walls, heater channels, and inside of the doors and quarter panels:
Back into the garage to cure, need to tape the black off after 12hrs then spray the white before 72hrs:
I have to say I was dreading this, but the single stage acrylic urethane instead of my usual base clear was not bad at all. This is the 5th boat/car I’ve painted but the first single stage, I’m not sure I will go back unless it is a show piece _________________ it's more fun loud and dirty |

with much effort the last of the DIY Bedliner is gone, and the one piece fiberglass front end is ready for paint. It’s got a few bumps and bruises so it matches the car perfectly

Ran out of light this evening, took a little longer to tape off than I expected. My 72hr recoat window is halfway gone, tomorrow has to be the day!

It has been a journey! I can see the finish line now.
Nothing like painting by moonlight… it looks just it was supposed to, no rust with quality paint and solid, but rough enough to have some character.
I pulled a little bit of the tape, will pull the rest tomorrow

Masking off, looks pretty good! Rearranged the shop, time to start throwing the suspension on and get the brakes together

Thanks guys. The colors are ppg’s “gm fleet white” and “black” haha nothing special here. The white does not have a blue or grey or tan look, just a pure white so it’s really bright.
Transaxle is mounted, needs to come back out and get cleaned up of course. I opened up the bell housing mounts to 7/16” grade 8, same for the nose cone mount. I cut/modified the body side mount to fit the King Kong torsion adjuster, you can see how close it is compared to a stock mount. There is also a mid mount that is welded to the bottom up of the frame horns.
Mounts fully welded in and paint touched up:
Scraped the transaxle and wiped with mineral spirits, then sprayed it with foaming engine degreaser before a pressure wash.
