Hey guys I have to ask as my 75 bus' distributor will not stay timed like it's kinda wobbly so I am going to replace everything because I already have the parts. Anyways is the type 1 engine and type 4 engine distributor drive shaft the same? |

The cog on the bottom of the shaft is supposed to be wobbly. If your hold down clamp is bent to crap you might not be able to get sufficient pressure against the distributor body to keep it from turning. How are you setting the timing? It is best to set it at 28° BTDC @ 3800+ rpms, with the hose(s) removed and plugged. |

Thanks guys and the timing keeps jumping from 12btdc to 0 and back and forth and there is no crank endplay so I'm totally confused |

try another timing light. If it continues be sure you have a spring between the distributor and gear. ALSO, if your idle is too high, say close to 900 - 1000 Rpm, you may b seeing the distributor mechanical advance kick in and out. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

There are thrust washers both between the drive cog and the body of the distributor and inside the distributor body. When they fail and disappear (which is common) the distributor shaft can move up and down as can the distributor drive. This will cause a major scatter of the timing. |
