Ok, here's the story so far.
Restoring (Partial) a 1968 Notchback FI Automatic.
Original Master Cyl, new front calipers and rear cylinders.
Replaced the leaking brake hardline by gas pedal. (goes from master to rear T)
Filled the reservoir and bled brakes to method in Bentley Manual
Next day, reservoir is low. Fill it up and pump the brakes.. seems ok.
Next day reservoir is low again... look for leaks, no leaks at wheels, T's, master.
All looks solid and now no pedal. goes 90% to the floor and then solid.
Reservoir always goes down to the same level.. about 75% full.
Bubbles when I add fluid.
Stumped as to where the heck the fluid is going.
Ideas
Thx

The fluid is probably going under the carpet and soaking it. The next place it'll go is into the tunnel. This is because it's leaking out the back (where the rod goes into it), and going into the car (where it normally goes, then travels to the rear (center of the car, then drips out)). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well, I pulled the Master Cylinder and Yup, there it was.. but it wasn't leaking into the drivers footwell, that's what had me stumped... it was leaking into the space between the floor and a patch someone had put in. thus not coming out the bottom of the car and "showing up" as the leak.
Sigh...
Well on problem solved, now to find a rebuild kit.
Took the Master apart and it's rusty as heck in there and the "front" seal (closest to the push rod is worn...
Any replacements, or something that will work...?
Cheers all.
Thanks for the reply

Common.
You note its an "original" master cylinder. I take it that means you only know that it came with the car and you have no idea how old it is.
I never replace old worn out slave cylinders WITHOUT replacing the MC. First, they are probably the same age. Second.....this almost always happens at some level.
Be sure to really hose out the brake fluid. Its corrosive. Ray |
