|
|
Mounting a Diesel bell housing to a WBX tranny and having problems with the slave bracket support not quite working out
I have two diesel set-ups, and the one I pulled from the van looks like the PO did not mount the support bracket to the tranny, since the threaded hole in the tranny looks like it was unused (see below) and the (rusty) bracket does not have evidence or a bolt head contacting it - but I could be wrong there.
Would the diesel bracket only with with a diesel (or air-cooled) tranny? This supposedly is an 84 WBX tranny. I can take the WBX bracket and re-drill and cut to make work, just rather make sure something is not amiss here. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

I think your issue is you need to install the diesel starter motor first and then that spaces the bracket out a little to tilt it down and line up the lower brace hole.

Mark - exactly right and thank you so much! Was leaving the starter off to make moving the tranny a bit lighter and did not even see this!
PS-I enjoy reading your posts and your contributions to this community are simply awesome.

Having trouble getting the SLAVE bracket to fit.
Then noticed that at the STARTER BOLTS AREA the bracket is majorly bent.
...and seems that it is supposed to be straight like this.
So I am going to remove the bracket and try to hammer it straight again...
...Am I on the right track?
Thanks

The question now is how to BEND the bracket?
I suppose I could remove the clutch lever but that might be near impossible... or somehow keep it attached to the starter and use a c clamp somehow to bend it back into shape? _________________ www.edwardpowell.com |

Got it done...
I hammered on the bracket from inside with a minisledge... got it enough back in shape to line up the holes.

Sledge hammers can fix any problem that arises I guess….
A tool not in my travel tool kit. |
I hear ya, I was very apprehensive about doing that because I imagined it might disturb lots of stuff in the engine etc.... but actually that was not the case, the vibrations didn't seem to go anywhere. I was surprised that it worked and didn't disturb anything. Keep in mind that in that position it was not even possible to wield much force.
I also don't carry a sledge hammer when traveling but that is because of its weight not it's lack of utility.
I'm sure I would have done a lot of unnecessary damage if I had tried to remove that clutch lever. The only other option would have been a sturdy c-clamp to try to bend it back - that might have worked, but I don't have a c-clamp here. _________________ www.edwardpowell.com |

In this case it is a massively thick casting in an area supported by a massive bolt clamping the casting to the thick iron block and holding the bracket steady. The bent bracket is comparatively flimsy.

Yeah …….. tell my Bell housing how tough he is for me…… |
Your concern is very appreciated Dave, but in this case it is misplaced. As I said, I began light pounding with major trepidation for the reason you mentioned... but you can easily FEEL it. NOTHING whatsoever was moving, vibrating, or anything. As Mark pointed out, it's like that wimpy bracket is being held by a 100KG vice I was very very surprised myself.
So let me ask you... how would YOU have solved this problem. My way took 5 min. and caused no damage
Using a c-clamp somewhere would have caused even more risk to the part you would clamp the bracket to.
Removing the clutch level would be near impossible and likely end up damaging something... what are you left with? _________________ www.edwardpowell.com |
