Here's a pic of a 1971 with a dirty, but org. breather. no nipples on top, that came out in 1972.
The orange is the 1971, the black one is a 1972 with the nipples oo top.

The 12mm hoe from the air cleaner attaches right next to the oil fill cap.

The charcoal canister connects to a port on the right side of fan shroud.

A 71 only air cleaner is easy to spot, it's the only year with the wax thermostat on it (that springy thing on the side of the snorkel), here's a pic from the classifieds, it's missing the breather flap and nipple so I didn't save the link to the ad.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

that nipple sticking out the RH side of the pic connects to the charcoal canister's purge nipple, the other end of the canister where the small hose from the tank connects goes to the fan shroud.

Yes,.... looking at the engine from the rear, the connection on the left side of the filter goes to the canister.

70 had the cable, 71 thermostat, 72 vacuum. 73/74 had plastic housing, with similar to 72 vacuum operation.

I just decided to finally get my ‘71 SB back to stock. At first glance, they seem hard to find for sale. What am I missing?

I had been looking for a deck lid that (I believe) was only a 3-year part ('70-'72) and have only seen one for sale once...maybe twice. The deck lid for those years for convertibles have four columns of seven slats (7777)...'73 and newer switched to the 7667 config and that's what you find on some verts that have had rear-end collision damage fixed way back in the day.

With that oil cooler sounds like it was a one-year-only part I'm sure it will be hard to find if you want an original...and they probably don't make replicas for general purchase...especially since SBs get more than their share of hate (which makes them cheaper for me!!! haha).

I just checked my SB I recently acquired and was pleased to see it does have the original oil bath cleaner in it...at least as far as I can tell...seems to match the pic Cusser posted above.

Good luck! I feel for ya!

Dag-nab-it !!! I discarded my stock 1970 and 1971 air cleaners back in the 1970s, didn't have room for them. But still have the VWs.....

That’s both unfortunate and unhelpful.

But I was trying to remember what the air filter assembly on my 1971 Super originally looked like. But I got sidetracked after finding out that some now consider Deputy Dawg cartoons racist....

Trying different search terms when looking through the classifieds can help sometimes, here's a selection from searching for "air cleaner" or "air filter" in the beetle and general parts sections:

Thanks. I’m understanding there may be something special about the ‘71 SB air cleaner vs the ‘71 Sedan air cleaner or other years’ air cleaners. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm thinking NOT.

I don't see why there would be a difference, they say all the changes were from the windshield forward. Very Happy
