My wife and I recently purchased a 1978 Super Beetle Convertible, our first VW Bug, so we are just getting into this.
We are studying “The Compleat Idiot”, websites, The Samba, etc…. and trying to get up to speed.
A couple of notes before I ask my questions. The Beetle came with a Fuel Injected engine, but we decided to have it changed out to a 34 PICT 3 carb.
Questions:
The picture is our current setup as it pertains (dual vacuum port advancer with the distributor). I have done a bunch of research and there's mixed opinions on this setup versus the single vacuum port advancer with a 009 distributor.
Just trying to get some opinions on whether or not I should leave the current setup or upgrade?
Any thoughts, comments, and help would be greatly appreciated.

The dual vacuum have both vacuum advance and vacuum retard along wth mechanical advance.
The vacuum retard is not needed and is there to lower emissions.
The 34PICT-3 you have looks to be aftermarket so you're best option is a "SVDA" or Single Vacuum with mechanical advance. The correct Bosch distributor is a 0231 170 034. There are many aftermarket Chinese copies. Some are much worse that others but all are worse than a genuine Bosch Made in Germany model. Check the classified for a restored genuine Bosch "034" distributor. _________________ Glenn

If the engine is running and running well leave it and enjoy the ride. It is missing a vacuum line to the retard side of the distributor vacuum can, but it may be that side is no longer working. If that is the case you could look into finding a replacement vacuum can. The vacuum line for the advance side is plugged into the wrong port on the carb. It needs to be plugged into the left side port on the carb as you are looking at it. You may also want to change the fuel lines, they look to large (possibly swelled). You will also want to seal all open holes in the tin work, so you are not pulling hot air into the engine compartment causing a possible over heating problem. You will also need to get proper manifold seals. By the way welcome to TheSamba. |

The vacuum advance line is not connected to the correct vacuum port on the carburetor. It should be connected to the left side of the carburetor. Swap the line and the plug around. _________________ Roads Scholar &
