Hey all - Just picked up this Notch and I'm not a specialist. I have restored bugs to original condition. First question, is the front apron originally spot welded on or is it bolted on. The car has typical battery box rust so I need to replace it and in front. Is IPS the best place for these to begin? Also need to replace all wiring. I will not be going all the way back to a concours because the pan has been replaced and it has been converted to 12 volt and also has a dual port engine. So my best option is a decent show-car/driver. So if you could help with best places to get parts, I am located in the Cleveland, OH area. Thanks Dan for the recent contacts.

Hey All,
OK been digging into this project, it looks like at some point the pan was replaced with a 1972 pan, which would explain the dual port heads, 12 volt, high back seats and the 4 bolt lugs. My question to you is I will be building a nice show car/ driver and with the 12 volt, disc brakes, and updated engine, I feel it is a good combo. Give me some feed back/ pros and cons? Anything would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

My big question would be how did they(the PO) set up the engine hanger set up?? Did they swap out the rear subframe for a Swing Axle set up? Or keep the IRS? Just asking, as that'll help us let you know what your options are.

My own 65 Notch has IRS and I welded in some some stock IRS engine hanger mounts, and used the IRS hanger bar on my engine. It's a fantastic cruiser.

Its a swing axle set up with the hanger. But it does have the IRS mustache mount on the engine. I will take that off.but need to get the fan off first. I just started tearing down the dual port engine. I don't mind the swing axle, had one on my 64 and 65 bugs.

If you're planning on rebuilding the engine, and adding full flow oil filtration, you might want to keep part of that bar (like John J. did on his 66 Square), as it'll work great for mounting the oil filter (and adapter unit) to it. That way, when you decide to pull the engine in the future, it'll come out with it already attached (1 less thing to disconnect before pulling the engine). Other than that, you might want to check and see if you have the rear "donut" part for the upper rear hanger, and the 5 phenolic shims that go with it, to help set the tension on it, as it's really a snubber, not a mount.

As for the high back seats, are they 3 point? Or are they 2 sliders? Just asking, as 72 is a transition year and can have either 1. If it's the 2 slider type, earlier low back seats will directly slide on if you want them. Very Happy

Thanks for all the info! Nice on the additional oil cooler idea.
The seats are the 2 slider version. I just ordered the donut snubber and the 1/4 floor pans to replace ones that are not too bad, except battery box as usual. Just to thin for my liking, so replacement time. I know one thing, it's gonna take a lot of hammer and dolly time. I will metal finish most that I can. I'll keep the pictures coming. Thanks all.

I found that the bottom door hinge on both sides is "loose". The allen head screws are tight, but the bottom hinge moves when you open and close the doors! What is the fix for this and have you seen it before??

That's going to look sweet. I love the Sea Blue color, and after seeing it on Pedro's Notch, I know yours will look fantastic. My T-34 was Sea Blue#2, and I really liked that color. I almost painted my 65 Notch that color after I sold my T-34, but in the end I kept the metallic blue color I had shot it back in 2000 (it's a BMW color).

Finally back on the project! I just pulled the transmission out and the part number that I came up with on the side of the transmission is 113301103D.
Can anyone help me identify what year the transmission is. The body is a 65 and the pan is a 72. It is a swing axle and I will be replacing I’ll gaskets and checking the sink rose and shift forks. I did identify the engine as also in 1972. So if anyone could help me with a D in the transmission I would appreciate it!

The numbers on the side are not going to tell you what someone did on the inside if it's ever been opened. You have to open it up and check it out (or send it out to be rebuilt to your specs).

In addition to the part number you found - there should be a serial number stamped into the case of the transmission.

Thank you for the help, I will look it up and get the serial number. Tearing it down now to see if everything is still in spec. Leaking like a sieve will be replacing all gaskets and seals. Mounts also broken, need to make sure it goes back together correctly!
