Next step on the chassis resto was the long gearshift bar & shift assembly. This long metal bar is purposefully bent to get around the other components in the tunnel. Removing the old gearshift coupler allowed the tube to be pulled-out through the front access hole. I cleaned & sanded-down the shaft then applied grease for a smooth fit. The new nylon bushing & clip as well as the new coupler came from Wolfsburg West. Pedro came by for the installation. The bushing with clip was pushed into the L-bracket inside the tunnel by hand. Then the long tube was inserted at the front & aligned with the hole, sliding easily down to the rear. Next was to install the gearshift lever, lubricated for smooth action. The 1962 Sea Blue cars had Satin Blue rubber parts for the gearshift lever & ebrake boot, and the gearshift knob is the solid ivory one.

Hey, Lee, looking GOOD!

You know all about my shift rod bushing issues:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=662961
How tight did yours fit on the rod? The clamp rings are usually the wrong size (or the bushing is, and the ring needs adjustment).

Phil: the shift tube slid easily into the hole/bushing (that had previously been lubricated). No issues.

Today I pulled the original front beam out to begin the resto. It was removed in about 2007 and the upper arms were cut-off to make it lower. Unfortunately the serial number of the beam was cut in half, so there's no way to authenticate this beam. The earliest beams had a rectangular central hole which was changed to an oval hole early in production. Lots of dirt & debris caked onto the beam. 20 degree inner left tie rod had already been replaced with a straight one.

Half the day later the beam is about 80% stripped. Hard dirty work but necessary.

I’m loving all the details Lee. That shifter boot is gorgeous!

Looks nice and clean Lee. Is Pedro going to weld in new bump stop brackets?

The design/shape of the upper snubber arm is different than the 1962 models that have the rounded center design. My 1962 Cabrio has the early design, so I know what it should look like. But since the cut-off pieces were tossed-out ... good luck finding anything that will fit & look right.

Easter weekend I got some more work done. Keep moving forward.
The front beam was washed with thinner & painted black. Tie rods & steering damper will be next.

Rear subframe would have cost $300 to get powdercoated so I opted to save the money and strip & paint it myself. It stripped pretty quickly and then was painted the next day. Huge Kamax end bolts cleaned up nicely. And I lucked-out by finding the rear subframe rubber parts & hardware from Josh Lucas from Illinois, who has been a huge help with NOS bits.

The painting process has been an extended one, beginning in June and finally completed in September. The single-stage enamel Sea Blue L360.2 body & Blue-White L289 roof colors were sprayed with four coats. It's looking very nice but will take another month to get it back to the workshop. The Sea Blue changes hues in different lighting & angles.

Fantastic seeing this one come together! That blue is just about perfect for the Type 34! Brings out all of the curves in the car...

Always happy to help you out, Lee!

Yup, I played hell when painting my 64 T-34 that Sea Blue#2 color, as it does like to change shades when you move, or the light changes on it. It's a real nightmare to match all around. But it does look very good on that body style. Your painter did a nice job on it.

After a month for the paint to harden & polishing with 3000 grit the body is ready to come back to the workshop. Amazing clarity and beautiful color. Francisco did an outstanding job.

Quick tow back from the bodyshop to my workshop. Quickly fitted Pedro's blue cloth & Ice Blue vinyl interior panels to see the combinations of blue. It's going to be fun reassembling this one!

Damn that looks great. Now the hard part starts...putting it all back together again. That should keep Pedro and maybe Jack busy. Wink

Marriage Day for the body & chassis. After several years of detailed work to get to this point, twelve good amigos helped with carrying the body & joining it to the chassis, for the last time. It's been seven years and there is still a lot of work to go to complete it. Pedro & Jack organized the work, adding the bolts to the chassis, and thankfully all the holes lined-up perfectly. Jason, Lee, & Lance helped to heft the bodyshell over the chassis. Eric drove 1000 miles with his trailer to bring it to Pedro's home for finishing. Lionel brought down the restored steering column. And Ron was the one who built the early motor. Bratwurst & Patron kept the crew happy. Our plan is to drive it to the Oct24 Type 3 Rally in Cayucos.
