I know it's not factory but figured it was the best place to put it for interest.
I like the bends in the horizontal bar to clear the wheels!

wondering if the '60' crayon marking on the tank is referring to tank cap size.

I was wondering what that marking was for too.
I feel like a factory worker would know the size by sight?

I noticed the tank is on reserve too, maybe limited gas in it to fine tune things?

It looks like all of the seats to me.
Middle is super evident but it looks like the 2 front halves sitting on top of a rear bottom, to the left of the middle seat

Is that an early 'touch the truck' contest?

None of them seems to be doing anything useful

Is this the reverse angle of the picture above?

The location looks to be the same and the guy with the receding hair to the right of this second pucture seems to be the guy at the rear left in the first picture..

Copied from the 'Historic Commercial VW Transporters Photos' page on Facebook.

truck in the second pic has also knobby tires in the rear and smooth sidewall tires in front. Like in upper pic.
But where has this pic been taken ?
Clearly not in Wolfsburg, and most probably not in SA, Australia or so, it is LHD.
Seems they are putting it on a service rack.
What's going on here, truck seems to be brand new.

Now we see it hanging on a hoist, all those guys holding it level and keeping it from bouncing around make sense.

edit interesting to note: has no windshield glass and wipers.
Could this be a South American part knocked down delivery, receiving Safaris ?
Or maybe even Portugal ?

more edit. in the second pic it doesn't seem to even have door glass/frames nor door handle installed. also missing gas door.

Thanx for posting this additional pic, i have always been wondering like crazy about whats going on here. It is a fascinating truck and pic ( series)

late to the party, but this is an illustration from the 1955 VW 'VW-Betriebe richtig geplant, richtig gebaut' binder.
VW officially providing dimensions and drawings and ideas to building and fitting out service garages and dealerships.
This is a mechanical/electric scissor/screw lift, that will grab a bus at its substructure from underneath. the ramps are part of the lift.
The basic use of this lift is to put buses to be serviced on proper roller cradles ( one pictured under bus already). this saves space in the shop and you only need one lift while working on several buses/sedans.
I have just recently been able to purchase this rare binder from my collector friend Patrick in the Netherlands and I have yet to read through and find all the stunning details.

It looks to me like there is a subframe mounted to the chassis of the Bus (or the Bus is resting on it). Presumably, that subframe consists of two parallel rails with two long pins running laterally through them. The ends of those pins would attach to the two lifting arms in the nearside of the photo.

If you look closely, there is a potential illusion in viewing the two arms, but they appear to be oriented inline with the length of the rails of the entire assembly, and they're action is in parallel with the ramps and up-and-down in the fore/aft direction, and so when it lifts, it resembles two railroad crossing arms lifting in the same direction, thereby translating the Bus in a bit of forward travel upon lifting, and then rearward again upon lowering. While hard to judge at the angle pictured, it looks like there is enough of an offset so that when the Bus moves rearward slightly upon lowering back down, the front beam would rest in the cradles, as would the rear torsion tube on its cradles. Does that make any sense?

There also appears to be a leadscrew down the middle, which looks to be for actuating the two lifting arms.

Just my two cents based on what I see. Of course, I could have it ALL wrong. Smile

24-A Model, fresh from the assembly line?

I wonder how that lift works with only two arms on the same side.

No doubts, very interesting pictures that are likely to have been taken at the same location/stations.

I do not think these depict operations that had been held in Portugal.
Why?
1- the VW assembly wasn't setup so early and with such scope of tasks in hand (notice pile of timber slats);
2- both 2 vehicles show rear axles with knobby tires fitted, clearly earmarked for difficult roads; (OK, even by Top-tier EU country standards, Portuguese road surface quality is crap... now in 2022) Laughing
3- this is likely to be an early SKD/CKD VW operation (notice mirror arm pointing down in A post)

So, I guess this one is Brazil. VW entered the market early (first factory outside Germany), but initially the operations were mainly SKD/CKD.
The rear axles with knobby tires makes sense: many roads in the vast interior (outside Sao Paulo/Rio de Janeiro and other big cities) were mostly unpaved or life of these vehicles was greatly expected to be faced with them, earlier than later.

So, how about that?

Yep. I think this picture from the gallery proves it. The wall in the background is the same. It's probably the same single cab on the trestle too...

Lots of details in these series of photos.

Perhaps the single cab is being taken off the fixture for final finishing. The lack of glass and wipers have been noted. The bus has more going on under the chassis than a beetle, so having it higher would be easier for assembly.

This is some good stuff.

I am curious about this lift and how it supported the vw. Could you provide a better picture from that manual?
