67 model has a backrest release function when you open the doors. Not sure about the earlier ones.
Post a picture of the part you are talking about. |

Hi all,
Yes that's the bit of kit. How does it work. Does it release the front upper seat to move forward?
Thanks Dave

It does release the front seat back so that it can be moved forward to allow access into the rear seat. This keeps the seat back in place during hard braking (while the door is closed, anyway) and allows for effortless access to the rear seat area when the door is open. |

Hi all,
Thank you for your replies & pictures. How does it work? Should you be able to push the protruding bar down to release the seat? If so mines stuck solid
Thanks Dave |

You've got the rough idea - push the lever closed and it releases the seat back lock.
I've had to take them apart in the past due to corrosion/dirt, etc. Or the cable is bad.
Another thing to check: Your carpet may be interfering with the operation if the covers are missing/damaged - there's a spring and lever under the carpet on the footwell - around the corner from the lever on the A pillar/door jamb - semi-adjacent to the vent at the floor - above and a bit forward.

Do you have the 80" long cables connecting the door releases to the seats! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

It releases it when you open the door.
Open door, bar moves outward and pulls on the cable, pulling the locking piece inward on the seat so the seat back can go forward.
When the door is shut, the seat back is locked so it won't go forward on you in an accident.
If the piece in the door jam is moving and pulling on the cable, you might just need to adjust where it connects underneath the seat. It can be slid back and forth under the seat and locked in place with a wing nut to set it correctly to lock/unlock when the door opens/closes.
As someone else asked, do you have the cables in place and hooked to the seat? _________________ How to Post Photos

You sould clean up that rust on those bolts, before they "FREEZE" in rust. I belive stainless are available or good used ones.
Beautiful square, I wish it was sunroof!

That hinge has been worked on a bit - there at least two weld spots and two additional screws just above the hinge. |
