All,
1970 Bus. Original Transmission (Been Rebuilt).
I know there has been past threads regarding the Transmission Grounding Strap. However, I cannot find where the exact original placement of the strap is.
I also checked the Bentley. Maybe I'm missing something.
I realize that it probably doesn't matter since you can ground anywhere on the tranny to the chassis.
Does any one have a picture or can explain the original location points for installation on Early Bays?
I would appreciate it. |

You can just about see it in your owners manual:
Do yourself one better, and inspect the studs on your transaxle for a clean mounting point and enough threads left on the studs to engage the nut with the strap in place. A cone-shaped wire wheel in a Dremel is my favorite way to clean ground strap mounting points. Sometimes the holes in new straps are large enough to warrant a fender washer.

Thanks guys……I finally found the stud. It’s on the passenger side, so I have to swap sides.
Should the end mounted to the transmission go to the 13 mm bolts or the 11mm bolts? |

The transmission mount bolt, where you first connected the ground strap, is no good at all since it's isolated
from the chassis (i.e. ground) by rubber. The stock location for the strap is on one of the 8 mm studs (which
I suppose you mean above by "13 mm bolt") on the final drive housing. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

do it like the photo. The stud should be on the left side, driver side arm bracket. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

All,
Thanks. I just corresponded a bit with SGKent.
What appears to be different, is that my chassis stud is on the passenger side vice the driver’s side.
With that said, I would assume that this doesn’t change the logic of the connection.
The Chassis connection is now a no brainer, it’s the transmission connection spot that is in question. |

Noticed that your ground strap won’t work as fitted in the picture.
You have bolted to the part of the transmission Mount which is insulated from the main body with rubber.
Would only work on body side of mount, or ideally as per pictures later on in thread. |

Mine is also on the passenger's side...maybe it's an early Bay thing? Here's another angle:

Thanks Mike, I was beginning to think I was losing it. Looks like yours is on the 2nd Bolt of the case of the transmission.
I’ll swap it out tonight. |

I just cleaned and tightened mine. I recall it being on the passenger side as well. ‘71 bus. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

It's on the passenger side on my 68 as well. Been messing with brake lines back on that passenger rear wheel and the strap occasionally gets in the way. _________________ 1968 Deluxe "Clipper L" Type 2

Now that you have it in the correct place take it back off and make it functional. |

Plus the Ny-Lock nuts above the ones where you have your strap are not doing anything. No threads are in the Ny-Lock part. _________________ 1973 tintop westfalia weekender.

I’m missing something on the “make it functional” comment.
Not being sarcastic….I’m not getting it. |
