Picked up a dirty but original set of OEM VW cylinder head tin on Monday for $25 locally, to run instead of modifying the aftermarket sets I already have. Some surface rust and some dings, but they will clean up perfectly.
Now to figure out what I want to do for paint on all the tin. I originally intended to do purple to match my wheels, and bought three cans of Duplicolor plum purple engine enamel to do it with. Now I'm not so sure. It might look a little too boy racer now I'm thinking. My original idea was to leave all the parts you won't see black, as well as the alternator backing plate and oil filler port. Fan shroud, apron and pulley tin,cylinder head tin, and bell housing tin would all have been purple.
I think I'll grab a few cans of black since I need some anyway, and think it over. I really like the way it looks with all black and understated, like on Glenn's car, but I want to have a little fun too.
I have a perverse desire to paint the car a grey/purple urban camouflage so I think either way would look good, although I had originally planned to go for the rally style like a black/tan version of the Salzburg rally cars from the early seventies.

Went to a local guys house to help him clean out his junk that he wasn't likely to use. Got myself a 1970 speedometer assembly, a couple pieces of engine tin, a decklid that's way nicer than mine, and a set of five ET41 4.5j sport wheels the wheels are pretty crusty but should be able to be cleaned up.
One of the tires on them is old enough to be made in Yugoslavia but they seem to fit up front with no issues. I'll call around to see about having them sandblasted and powdercoated.
I was afraid they wouldn't fit, bit I'm running tapered springs up front and have at least an inch and a half of clearance, and the ball joint clears with plenty of room as well.
I also checked the rubber mounts for my fresh air fan, they're shot. Cleaned all the junk out of the trunk too.
Checking out the dent in my hood, and trying to think of the best way to deal with it.
The car has sat long enough that there's rust on at least the shifter and parking brake too.
I also reassembled the passenger side door handle, so now it locks on both sides. The lock cylinder fell apart inside the door a while back.

Don't SuperBeetles have a lateral brace on the underside of the hood in this area, which would block direct access? On a '69 Beetle which I revived about 20 years ago with a larger dent in the hood, I used the gloved palm method. Worked well. Or use the large rounded end of a baseball bat like a ram to work it out. |

Bent up a couple pieces of 1/8" by 1" aluminum scrap and drilled them for bolts. Need to get some thicker"C" or angle channel to make the brackets and flip them inside the vents. I think some 1/4" thick stock should be enough to drill and tap for 6mm bolts. I bolted them together after drilling the first hole, finished the second, then ground/filed them at the same time so they match.

Painted more tins, and got to work grinding off the mangled wire hold down tabs and air fitting from my fan shroud. I'm going to use a snap-in hole plug to fill the hole after painting. After that I hit it with a coat of paint. I'll let it cure for a few days then give it a sanding all over before I hit it with another coat or two.
Started cleaning the OEM VW cylinder head tin, these things were brick red with rust when I started. Using Rust-oleum rust remover spray gel with a wire brush, and I have to say it works very well. I also cleaned up a few other crusty miscellaneous pieces of tin as well.
Beat on them a bit and straightened out some dents, I have some cracks I would like to weld up before I paint them.
Cleaned up my pulley too. It got painted, as well as most of the rest of my tin.
After the parts were all cleaned and painted I started looking at what I have left. I need to clean up the heater boxes next and hit them with a few coats of grey, take the oil fill port off the generator stand for refinishing, dig out my hoover bit and flaps/linkage to clean and paint when I paint the head tins. Slow progress but still progress. Need to buy more black paint already.
Also- I'm super glad I didn't do purple! The black shows sooooo many imperfections as it is. I'm definitely doing hammertone paint for all my other beater tin, as it would probably look a nice with less attention to prep work.

Painted a handful of parts, but for now here's the shroud, everything else is packed wrapped up in paper to prevent scratches-
It's got a few rough spots that show through but I'm not too bothered since it has a few imperfections overall. It'll be fine for a daily driver. I could hit it with some sandpaper and spray it again before build and install if it gnaws at me.
Got the flywheel off of the old crank, that torque multiplier is awesome. Just need to clean it up.
Checked out the heater boxes that were on the car (the two dark ones) and found that the driver's side one is an aftermarket with a simple non-corrugated pipe inside the heatsink, and a pretty big hole underneath has rubbed through. I have another pair of OEM boxes that matched and were in much better shape, but needed some parts off the old ones. I'll degrease everything and paint soon.
Here's the old crank, I'll strip the gears and oil slinger from it then toss it. That failed rod journal is black and deeply scored.
Did my best with a block of wood and a hammer with that dent on the hood. Not perfect but much better-

Got my heater boxes painted- turned out better than expected for how beat these are!
Took my headlights apart to install these mesh protectors, and found one of the lower driver's side mounting screws for the aiming assembly was missing, and the holes didn't line up. Turned out that it was assembled 90° off from the way it was supposed to be.
Incorrect-
Correct-
Slipped the mount tabs under the retainer screws, and since the original screws were nearly stripped (and one had to have the head ground out and removed from behind with vice grips!) And did some creative bending to make them work.

Also got a replacement dash vent. Mine is missing pieces, so I converted to the later 73 style that has more modern direction control. The original is going in a box until I find the missing bits to complete it.

Replaced the fuel line under the tank, and all the evap lines other than the clear one by the brake reservoir. This was a pain in the ass- had to pull my strut bar out and the tank fought me the whole way.
Old lines-
Only a foot or so left over-
Under tank-
Replaced the no-name garbage sending unit with a JP Dansk unit-
Old one, stopped working whenever it got under a quarter tank-
Had to put a heli coil in the engine to fix a pulled stud-
Finally stripped the block back down and dealt with the pulled stud. I was a nervous wreck but it went smooth. Holds torque properly now.
Dug out the heli-coil kit-
Here's the pulled stud, with magnesium sheared off into the thread-
Drilled and tapped-
Phew. Not too bad.
Perfect fit.
Swapped the oil pump studs around. Looks like the last builder turned them around on the left side only. Other side was threaded out. Got them both threaded in a good bit now for my 26mm pump and SSS pump outlet cover.
As always, slow progress. Next up I'm stripping the rods and weighing them, and lightening them as needed. Prepare yourself for a big wall-o-text
Well, I have been driving it a good bit lately, at least 20-30 minutes per trip, maybe 30-40 miles all in each weekend, and at least a 15-20 minute freeway run nightly after work. Ensure that I do lots of downshifting, and let the oil get hot. It does seem to take a good bit of work to warm up the oil- I rarely see more than 160 on the oil temp gauge unless you hit the freeway for more than fifteen minutes or so.
Saturday morning I put new tires on it, and went 185/65 on all four corners, rather than the staggered 175/65 front, 205/65 rear I previously ran on it, now that I have the added rear sway bar, stiffer shocks, etc. The car feels much better balanced for grip now, and looks a bit cleaner with the level stance rather than the rake it had before. Freeway stability has improved a bit too, which is important around here, as we have a consistent heavy crosswind all over the freeways and bridges out here. I have a reproduction Kamei type front spoiler to put on at some point as well.
Speedometer cable snapped last weekend, but I need to pull it out to clean and re-lube the internal gears, as well as replace the nylon odometer drive gear in it, as it only counts miles sometimes, and then stops for a day or two. From previous experience the gear is cracked or slipping on the shaft, so I picked up a replacement on ebay from Aircoolin.
The engine is running well, although when fully warm the synch goes off a bit, raising the idle from ~900 to about 1400. Need to check out the linkage, and maybe rotate the carbs on the manifolds a smidge to see if that keeps them expanding at the same angle. It did at first have a rather rich idle, and it would not lean out enough without running rather poorly. I know the idles aren't too big at 55, so hopefully its just getting it dialed in. Still can't find my synch snail.
Driving around town I find that it seems to have a little sluggish spot right at transition it feels- Almost like a lean spot as the mains kick in. With the 30mm vents I have a feeling I'm a bit on the lean side, I'm almost thinking I should hop up from currently installed 137.5 to maybe 140? I have 140s as well. Hmmmm. Assuming I actually remembered to install the 137.5 mains I had ordered at carb rebuild time
I also have the clone IDFs on hand that I need to grind the manifiolds to fit. They are too thick at the mounting base to fit into the opening in the cylinder head tin without some work. I'm not in a hurry to install them, but may order some 30mm vents for them first.
The car is very responsive to your driving style- and can be driven fairly aggressively. It revs so quickly under load that the gearing almost feels too short- It's as if first gear is over as soon as it begins. It makes the car not necessarily touchy, but the torque curve feels very linear up until the nice wide sweet spot- very responsive and a great match to my driving style. I tend to be very quick at running around corners, maneuvering for lane changes, long sweeping freeway onramps, etc. so the way the car hugs the curves tightly and then slingshots its way out of them so smoothly and nimbly is really, really enjoyable.
Speaking of nimble cornering ability and driving style, I ordered Corbeau seat brackets for the car. They came in this last week, and I'll fit them soon to take measurements for seats soon. The number one change I feel this car needs are more supportive seats. You need to brace yourself when hitting the turns hard to stay planted in the car.

Two notches down on Empi struts, KYB Excel-G cartridges, red sport springs
7/8" Topline front sway bar
Red urethane bushings all around
strut tower brace
Rear-
3/4" rear bar

I almost think that I could go to a softer rear shock now that i have the sway bar in the rear. I may swap in some Monroes I have just to see how it feels.

Will you be sandblasting and painting those 4.5" sport wheels you bought? If you do, you can look for a pair of the 5.5" version of that wheel from a Porsche 914 which had 40 mm offset (stamped ET40) for just the rear. Or use the 5.5" SportBug wheels which had even more deep dish (ET26).
After the blasting, check each of your 4.5" wheels carefully as to their offset. Should be stamped ET40 or ET41 for Super Beetle. Standard Beetle-based 1974 Love Bugs used the same sport style wheel but those had more deep dish at ET34. Ghias had ET46! Many sellers do not know the difference and think they are all the same as long as the width is the same. The cooling slots on the wheels also varied slightly with one style having a slight "border" along the edges. The shot of your rusty wheel from last year clearly shows the borders.

Sorry for the late response, I missed this somehow. These were free, so I'm just going to clean them up and use them. They do appear to all be the same style on the details. If I'm not mistaken they are 4.5", ET41. I'm fairly certain they came from a 74 Beetle, as the guy I got them from had a couple of them over the years. Might do a darker silver or gunmetal/graphite color on them. My Girlfriend actually suggested a purple/plum color like my existing wheels Still not sure what direction to go. More news, is that I now have a set of Corbeau A4 seats installed!!! These completely transformed how the car feels- they are much more supportive, and more firm without being uncomfortable. If I would have know the difference they would have made I would have done this years ago. The shocks feel nowhere near as harsh now that the seats actually hold you still

More progress!
Saturrday- installed my momo prototipo wheel with the momo hub adapter. I gotta say, best aftermarket part install experience ever. Perfect fit, all parts included, easy install. In and out in ten minutes

Sunday I took a long neck die grinder with a burr bit to rough up the gossy insides of the offset IDF manifolds I have, In preparation to install the 40IDF clones on my car with CSP linkage soon. Primarily I removed the internal casting seam/flash and roughed up all the glossy surfaces to promote atomization.
I also took a file to true up the surface the nuts go against on the flanges, this week I'll rub them all down on some sandpaper to true up the gasket surfaces.
Then I replaced the steering wheel bolts with stainless, since I hear the only real complaint on these is that the included hardware tends to flash rust. These are nice quality ones and look pretty nice, if I do say.
I gotta say, I love this wheel. The thicker grip is very comfortable, and the smaller diameter feels much more responsive. I don't find the smaller diameter that much more difficult to use at low speed at all. Maybe the thicker grip makes up for it? My only caveat is that the top inch or so of the speedometer is blocked by the grip. I rarely look at my speedometer anyway, but it may be a big deal for some. This is a 350mm wheel. Momo also makes a 370mm "California" wheel, but it has a thinner grip. It may be a good alternative if you added a grip wrap to make it thicker.
IDF 40mm clone carbs are set aside, and my baseline jetting to start will be 52idles, 120main, 28vents, 200air, F11 emulsion tubes. Planning to go up to 30mm vents but unsure what main, may start at 127.5. Strap yourselves in kids, 'cause this is going to be a long update
Saturday morning, I pulled my 205S distributor, and adjusted the stops in a little to shift the curve up for more idle advance. After reinstalling it, I decided to finally take a good look at my kadrons, and to pull the air cleaner braces off to extend them and lift them up out of the airstream- the "high-flow" mod everyone does and recommends. I should have done it a long time ago, but, in my defense, I was driving the car without issue and I was lazy.
While looking things over I notice that not only is the venturi loose in the passenger side carb, but there is gas dribbling out of the previously-repaired accelerator pump nozzle, and the air corrector jet was not flush with the top of the casting like the drivers side carb. Something fucky is obviously going on, so off comes the carb for more inspection. During teardown I take a look inside the discharge nozzle port and see the air corrector jet and emulsion tube about to come apart. At this point I decide to pull the air corrector jet, and the pump nozzle to repair both.
Careful not to lose the check ball under the nozzle!
So, out comes the welder's gloves and a torch-
Air corrector jet came out easily with a little heat, and gently prying it out with a smooth nail. The emulsion tube is just loosely sitting on the air corrector jet here.
This is where things go wrong. I applied a little solder and flux, and as I'm heating up the jet the neck of it completely crumbles away
At this point I weigh my options. Wait an untold amount of time for a new air corrector jet from the one lone vendor that makes them, and that I don't care to deal with based on past experiences, track down a parts carb to rob one from, or swap the kadrons off and put the complete set of IDF clones on.
No brainer, really
As others found, the manifolds have a ton of extra material that needs to be removed. I traced the outline of a gasket onto them, and went to work with a 80 grit flapper wheel. About five minutes in, my Harbor Freight grinder decided to completely die. I took it apart and couldn't get it going. In it's defense it was like eight years old, abused, and really shitty.Took a break for the night, and picked up a new Ryobi grinder the next morning. That Night I decided to give the carbs one last once over, I set the floats to 11/28mm up/down, gave everything a good blast of compressed air, and got them bench set and ready to install. I'm unsure about the 40mm top casting with these 44mm stacks- I feel like it might not be a bad idea to machine these bigger or at least file a chamfer onto them. I can't imagine that step having any positive effects. For the accelerator pump adjustment I set both so that 7mm of thread is exposed after the adjustment nut.
More grinding.
I also removed the casting flash on the outside of the manifolds, just because it bothered me
Once done with the grinding I resurfaced the mating flanges at either end of the manifolds for a nice smooth leak free fit. I also filed the top of the head end flanges flat so the nut/washers have a smooth flat surface to bear against.
Also, for anyone interested, the included hex bar linkage plates supposedly wont fit according to the CIP1 product description, but they do appear to fit with a stock fan shroud. The cold start plate screws will foul the fan shroud, however. I did a little hammer surgery to dent the shroud a little to get the screws to clear. My shroud is far from perfect, so I didn't mind. If you ran a 36 horse aftermarket shroud it would clear just fine. At his point I dug out the CSP linkage kit I had, got it installed, and fired up the engine with the linkage loosely set. It started immediately and went right to a fast idle.
Amazingly, both barrels on each carb were measuring the same on my snail, so I went ahead and let the engine run for a few minutes, re-set the timing to 30 all-in (which with me adjusting the stops put me to ~11 initial) popped the linkage off the carbs, and then went to adjust the mixture screws for lean best idle. I had to turn each mixture screw inwards maybe 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn. The barrels still measured nice and even, and I did not touch the bypass screws. Based on this and how it pulls I almost think I could step down from the 50 idles to maybe a 47. The air cleaners are, frankly, cheap. They are functional, however. I'll replace them with some nicer cast top/bases at some point. Current jetting is 50 idles, 120 main, F11, 28mm venturis.
Now I have them all set up, I found that the linkage needed help pulling the carbs closed all the way, so I added a helper spring to get them all the way shut. This particular set of linkage does not include a return spring as the kadron CSP linkage does. I went ahead and connected the vacuum advance to the drivers' side carb, and took it for a drive.
I have to say, these carbs are great! Instantaneous throttle response, Butter smooth throughout the rev range, and seamless transition from progression/idle circuit to the mains. Strong, consistent acceleration all the way to 5700RPM I keep sounding like a broken record, but this does not feel at all like a 1776 engine with only .417" lift at the valves
Car runs well enough that I think it's time to clean up the engine bay a bit- I'm planning to relocate my TFI module behind the back seat, and I've been sick of that dirty grimy ignition coil for a while now.I drove the car to work this morning (45 miles, 95% highway at about 70MPH) and it performed flawlessly even on some nice steep steady grades.
I liked the kadrons but I'm going to clean them up and put them away for now. I'll source some repalcement nozzles, a new air corrector, and then prep them for a later project as I'm able to source parts. I will still do the high-flow mod to them, easy enough with them out of the car.

I subscribed to this way back at the start but at some point the samba engine stopped sending alerts. Glad I stumbled upon it today, enjoyed catching up thru the last 2 pages over coffee. Sounds like a super fun car to drive, ill have to hit Spout Run today to recreate that "slingshot"....as much as myn1600dp will allow!
Hearing the driving descriptions makes me curious about dual carbs and has me pricing out the mono steering wheel. Do they include the mounting kit? Thing about duals is that they look like so much work - grinding badly finished parts, "chamferring", jetting, wonky linkages, balancing, crappy filters.... Does a quality out of the box and pop them in dual carb kit even exist???
