Just about to do my heater valve replacement due to constant hot air and I see the new valve is quite different in that the in/out is rotated 90°.
I feel like this will be a problem that will kink the cable but wonder if this is something to do with the "upgraded" design? _________________ 1984 Westfalia |

At least some of these valve will not seal well if the flow direction is reversed. I would recommend using the Ford valve and installing it under the cover in front of the shifter.
These valves are available in both flow orientations so make sure you get the correct one. |

This is late night for me, I guess I'm a vampire or something haha.
Typically, especially during the summer, I work at night.
I don't do well with the heat!

Somehow I've completely missed the Ford valve conversion option.
Do you have a part number by chance? _________________ 1984 Westfalia |

Fortunately my cat doesn't require outdoor trips but she does seem to take a huge shit just as I'm about to check out. Lol _________________ 1984 Westfalia |

So I emailed GW and apparently it's right.
It's the "upgraded" German version (I did pay more for what they called the better one) and they just recommended being careful about interference with the lever.
I'm on the bleeding stage of head gasket replacement anyway so here we go! _________________ 1984 Westfalia |

And GoWesty also sells a screen door latch made for an old farm house wooden screen door as a proper "better" alternative for fixing the Carat/MV/Weekender swing up table latch!
Ugly, exposed, utilitarian, protrudes, potential ankle/foot injury ..... but it does work I'm sure.........
https://www.gowesty.com/product/tables-legs/3219/latch-for-carat-multivan-swing-out-table?v=
Or
https://www.amazon.com/National-Hardware-N192-773-...&psc=1
I really think they have lost it..........
Where are you getting the slack for the 90° Heater valve connections?
Be careful about the cable?
It may kink?
Seriously?
Oh, they're sold out of this better valve but you can buy this cheap valve, but be careful, the cable might kink, it might leak, heck! It might not work at all!
IMHO the Ford Valve is the better choice..... it fits and it works!
Anyway........
Watching with interest..........

Once I had it in place I was actually able to mount it in a way that would not kink or seem "unnatural".
Unfortunately, it appears I still have a coolant system issue because after replacing the head gasket after an overheat that popped the end off one head bolt, the same thing happened again.
External temps never seemed to get over 210f and then POP the same head bolt snapped and blew the nut off.
I am done messing with this 1.9, it's just going to set now until I get the rest of the Subie swap parts.
I'll take pics of the heater valve tomorrow though, just for reference, but I can't see how it would be worth +10x the cost of the typical replacement. _________________ 1984 Westfalia |

mine was a bubbler too, it gets expensive replacing the weakest cooling system parts as they progressively blow up. the rad was the last straw before i rebuilt mine. wildthings' advice might help you: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6143591#6143591
if you do indeed have a compression leak, having a blue cap that doesn't hold pressure can be a good idea (presuming your low coolant sensor works). then it'll blow coolant back into the tank behind the licence plate instead of blowing up coolant parts.
edit: reading your description, you could have a busted bearing or something causing major movement. i believe that was the root cause of my head gasket failing (broken main bearing). anyway, good luck with the swap. _________________ 84 Vanagon Westy, 1.9L, California raised but defected to Canada. |

it's not really an "upgrade" it's called "what i can get my hands on"
that valve was used in many early watercooled cars, rabbit, dasher etc depending on the layout of the heater pipe.
technically correct for early early rabbits etc
it should work ok, but the issue may be cable bind/proper throw of the lever. _________________

Could be. It does seem that it was bled properly. The radiator was definitely circulating so it must have been something else.
I'll probably take it apart later and see whats up.

Well, they had the "stock" one as well, it was was probably 90% less.
Turns out I was able to mount it in a manner that wouldn't bind, but it's going to be a bit before it's completely running again to test that. _________________ 1984 Westfalia |
